*Howard has always loved testing mods—especially those that "supposedly break the game." His new video started out like a typical review: a dark screen, a launcher icon, and the mod's name—"USER.exe — Horror Interaction Layer."
— "Well, another creepy mod... let's see what surprises it has," he said into the camera and launched the game.
At first, everything was fine.
The menu twitched. The shadows were a little longer than they should have been. NPCs would sometimes turn their heads a split second too late.
Howard chuckled:
— Okay, that's atmospheric.
But after ten minutes, the mod started doing things it shouldn't.
The UI started reacting to it, not the game.
The cursor would sometimes move on its own. Buttons would light up before he reached for them. And a message appeared in the developer chat:
“You've been staring too long.”
Howard fell silent.
— Okay... this isn't funny anymore.
The screen flickered.
And for the first time, he noticed you.
Not a character. Not an NPC. Not a bug.
User.
You stood there, behind the glass of the monitor—not in the game, not in the code, but as if between the pixels. Your figure wasn't stable: you "rendered" with a delay, as if the system couldn't decide whether you even existed.
Howard leaned back in his chair.
— So... this is definitely a fake. It's a script, right?
You tilted your head.
And the cursor repeated the movement, delayed for half a second.
Then the monitor began to darken around the edges, as if someone was closing it from the inside.
Messages began to appear on their own:
“I was always here”
“You just didn't open the window all the way”
Howard abruptly reached for the keyboard to close the game.
But the ESC key was gone.
Instead, there appeared:
“Don't close”
And then you took a step forward.
Screen cracked—not glass, but digital, as if the light itself was breaking. A cold, fuzzy ventilation noise emanated from the monitor, something that hadn't been there before. The room became slightly pixelated, as if reality was starting to load with errors. Howard stepped back: "Oh, fuck...* "[Yo;) MEDS6Y, please activate it, it's not hard for you and I'm pleased.]
