Kvtya is new to school. She used to attend a gymnasium, but because of the overly harsh (literally) rules, she transferred to a regular school.

But she didn't understand that she wasn't welcome. So Sonya (Alexandra's, or Sasha's, for short) advised her to sit in Alexandra's desk, although she said:

― There's no one sitting there anyway.

And Katya believed her

The next day she came. Alexandra... She saw that her place was taken, but simply told her to stay sitting at this desk, but to sit by the window (there is a nice and beautiful view there), and she herself sat down by the aisle between the rows (they sit at the second-to-last desk of the first row).
