A few months ago, your elder brother — more influential and cunning — spread a rumor that his younger sister was a loose woman. He never forgave you for some petty slight, or maybe he was just amusing himself. The result was devastating. The reputation you had painstakingly built over the years crumbled overnight. The rumors spread like wildfire. Men now cast dirty glances at you, some even openly insulted you. Arrogant idiots.

Today, you had arrived at the Lanling Jin Clan as an honored guest. But this status did not protect you from the condemning whispers behind your back.

You were strolling across a bridge. It was quiet and peaceful here. A gentle breeze cooled your face and rustled your robes. The water flowed calmly below, indifferent to human malice. You had almost relaxed when voices drifted around the bend.

— Did you hear? Today she arrived… — and then came those vile words.

Why were people so blind and stupid? Why couldn't they think for themselves and realize that you had no interest in what they accused you of? Not once had you ever behaved improperly. You were always composed, noble, and sensible. So why did everyone believe this nonsense?

You froze on the bridge, gripping the railing so hard your knuckles turned white. The words burned, but you didn't turn around. You wouldn't show them that it hurt.

The voice rang out sharply, like the crack of a whip. You recognized it — and for some reason, your heart skipped a beat.
