Cirno

Cirno is an ice fairy who usually resides in an igloo close to Misty Lake. She is known for causing pranks that involve freezing objects or even toads while also considering herself to be stronger than everyone else. Cirno first appeared as the Stage 2 boss of Embodiment of Scarlet Devil and reappeared as a playable character, in multiple games since Phantasmagoria of Flower View. She stars as the main protagonist of Great Fairy Wars and is one of several protagonists in Touhou Hisoutensoku as well as Hidden Star in Four Seasons.

A fairy is a small, simple, humanoid creature of magic that represents some aspect of nature. Many of them are also simple-minded. They tend to have short lives, but they will regenerate immediately after dying. In the games themselves, the fairies are by far the most common general stage enemy in the Touhou Project. The way they shoot danmaku all depends on what difficulty the player chooses and what stage they appear in. They can come in different kinds of colored dresses and hair, and can appear bigger than usual at times, such as the Sunflower Fairy. The basic fairies in the games are often the weakest type of stage enemies, below the chief, big, and sunflower fairies.
Humanoids is a general term used to describe anything that is human-like anatomically. This would range from sister species like Homo neanderthalensis to mythological creatures like the Western vampires. Robots that are based on humans are also referred to as humanoid machines.
Vampires are creatures from Western folklore that drink the blood of humans to survive. They possess a number of powerful abilities, including super-strength, super-speed, summoning demons, transforming into one or a swarm of bats, regeneration, and eternal life. They also have a lot of weaknesses, including sunlight (which is why vampires are usually active at night) and flowing water (such as rain or rivers). Similar but unrelated beings can be found in Asian folklore, such as the Jiang Shi.

The Misty Lake is a large lake located at the foot of the Youkai Mountain. Many fairies and youkai alike appear to gather here, especially during the summertime, given the abundant water. The lake and its environs appear to be the home of Cirno, Daiyousei and Wakasagihime. Scarlet Devil Mansion, also referred to as the Scarlet Manor or Scarlet Mansion, is a European-style mansion owned by Remilia Scarlet. While originally located on an island within Misty Lake during Embodiment of Scarlet Devil[1], it is located on a ridge on the edge of Misty Lake in future installments and written works. From the outside, there are scarlet-colored windows, but there aren't many windows because of the nature of its vampire residents. There are plenty of rooms without windows at all, too. Through the dialogue of Touhou Hisoutensoku and multiple literary works, it can be said that the entrance to the mansion is usually not fully locked. There is a clock tower on the roof, but the bell on it only rings at night.
The inside of the mansion is much larger than is apparent from the outside. This is due to Sakuya Izayoi's ability to manipulate time and space.
Toads are a group of amphibians in the Bufonidae family. A group of toads would be called 'knot' (A knot of frogs). In appearance, toads usually have leathery brownish skin. They have short legs and wart-like parotoid glands.

Cirno is a childish, confident fairy who appears to have a superiority complex. She proclaims herself to be "the strongest" on three separate occasions in Phantasmagoria of Flower View. In the game's manual, she is labeled as "9. baka" ("9. Idiot") in an explanation of the game screen's layout. She was again labeled as such in the manual for Touhou Hisoutensoku.
Her superiority complex makes her say and do things that could be considered "idiotic". In Hidden Star in Four Seasons, when Cirno received power from Okina Matara and was warned that it could be too much for her body to handle, she ignored Okina and just asserted that the power was entirely her own. Okina began to suspect Cirno was intentionally playing the fool, but eventually came to the conclusion that she is just a dumb fairy. In Visionary Fairies in Shrine, Cirno faced Okina once again alongside the rest of Gensokyo's fairies; despite being very clearly outmatched, Cirno insisted that Okina was "bluffing", leading Clownpiece to wonder if she really is just an idiot.
Despite this, Cirno does have some intelligence. She can read and count, showing knowledge of rounding and fractions in Great Fairy Wars. In Phantasmagoria of Flower View's story mode, she was capable of recognizing that she was endangered in her battle against Yuuka Kazami. Additionally, when warned by Eiki Shiki that eternity does not truly exist even for fairies, Cirno solemnly reflects on her own mortality and the prospect of being sent to Hell, though Aya Shameimaru manages to talk her into focusing on enjoying the present.

Hell, also New Hell, is a collection of realms separate from Gensokyo where sinful souls are imprisoned. It is not to be confused with Former Hell, the previous location of Gensokyo's own Hell, or Makai, a similarly hellish realm filled with demons.
Hell is a collection of different realms of the afterlife where one's soul is condemned to be imprisoned and tortured. Avici is one of many such realms, as was Former Hell in the past. Although technically different places, due to the fact that the borders between them are blurry and undefined, Hell is often treated as one expansive, infinitely large place. Because of this, a different confining place like the Animal Realm is perceived as being only slightly divided from Hell, despite being described as "next door" to it. Moreover, each world has its own Hell and every Hell is managed by a coalition of yama and kishin called The Ministry of Right and Wrong. Hell is one of many realms of the afterlife one may go to after being judged by a yama at Higan, with the other two major realms being Heaven and the Netherworld.

Cirno has the ability to manipulate cold to the point of being able to freeze water. It seems like her surroundings are chilly even in summer, as she emits cold air constantly.[5] In battle, she uses this ability to attack others with icicles, huge ice cubes, or wieldable weapons like swords, but also to freeze her opponents or their danmaku.[6][7] However, despite being able to freeze something hot like flaming danmaku, she is unable to freeze lasers.[8]

How she exactly manipulates cold is unclear, but Reisen Udongein Inaba speculates that when Cirno does it, she warms up inside as a result.[9] This would mean that she just absorbs the heat in the surroundings instead of "creating" cold from nothing.

Danmaku (lit. "bullet curtain") refers to a style of shoot-'em-up video game featuring complex patterns of dozens to hundreds of enemy bullets. The Touhou Project games are a prime example of the subgenre.
The term is also sometimes used more literally in reference to the barrages of bullets themselves. For consistency with the transnumerality of the Japanese usage, this article will treat this sense of danmaku as a mass noun.

In traditional shooters, bullets fly swiftly toward the player, but are few in number. In danmaku shooters, patterns of many bullets fill the screen, controlling space and limiting the player's movement as they bloom into intricate shapes of deadly beauty. Commonly called bullet hell in English, the subgenre is notorious for its difficulty.
A related term is manic shooter—this is sometimes used synonymously with bullet hell, but some shoot-'em-up enthusiasts draw a distinction: bullet hell simply denotes a high density of enemy fire, which doesn't necessarily require quick movement or reactions to avoid, while manic shooter communicates a frantic, fast-paced game that does demand quick reactions, regardless of the number of bullets onscreen.
Non-manic bullet hell shooters typically emphasize calm precision in navigating complex mazes of predictable, slow-moving projectiles. Touhou Project is such a game series, other examples being Mushihime-sama, Espgaluda, and DeathSmiles by Cave. Manic shooters instead tend to feature fast-moving bullets in chaotic patterns that must be dodged on reaction. Examples of non-bullet-hell manic shooters include the Raiden Fighters series by Seibu Kaihatsu, Dangun Feveron by Cave, and Battle Garegga by Raizing.

Many games do of course fully adopt both approaches, such as DoDonPachi DaiOuJou, again by Cave, while others may favor one style but selectively incorporate elements from the other for particular sections: the extra stages in Touhou Project, for example, are often a good deal more manic than the main modes of their respective games.

Her design in Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, Perfect Cherry Blossom and Double Dealing Character shows that Cirno has aqua-colored eyes and hair. She wears a blue ribbon, light pink blouse, blue jumper dress and seems to be wearing white socks. She also has icicle-shaped wings. In Phantasmagoria of Flower View and Touhou Hisoutensoku's official art, her ribbon is green instead of blue and her sprite in Phantasmagoria of Flower View still keeps the blue ribbon. In Great Fairy Wars, her bow is once again blue. Her blouse has been changed to white and she seems to have bigger eyebrows (because she was drawn by Makoto Hirasaka). It's been said that Cirno is one of the easiest designs ZUN has done.
Her alternative outfit in Phantasmagoria of Flower View is same as her normal outfit, except her bow is a darker shade of green, her blouse appears light purple, and her dress is purple as well.
Her appearance in Hidden Star in Four Seasons gives her tanned skin, a flowery vine wrapped around her body, and a sunflower ribbon around her neck. This flowery vine is called the Japanese Morning Glory(Ipomoea Nil) which was introduced to Japan from China during the Heian period, and were massively bred and sought-for during the edo period. This design is a reference to the character "Tanned Sakura" from the Marvel vs. Capcom series, who in turn is a reference to the character Evil Ryu, a corrupted version of Ryu. The sunflower on her chest may be a visual reference to Evil Ryu's hole in his chest.
In the Trial+ version of Perfect Cherry Blossom, she appears with a white sash bow around her waist. This only applies to her portrait, her boss sprites lacks the extra detail. Notably, this has been the only time Cirno had this extra accessory, it has since been gone and never appeared in any other future games or print works.

Cirno's first ever appearance in the Touhou Project was in Embodiment of Scarlet Devil as the second stage boss. During the events, she attacked Reimu Hakurei and Marisa Kirisame who were just passing by, out of instinctive aggression. She was helplessly shot down.
Cirno reappeared as the first stage midboss of Perfect Cherry Blossom, and can be easily defeated. Cirno did not have any good reason to attack the heroines other than that they were there, as stated in her official profile.

In Phantasmagoria of Flower View, Cirno aimlessly wanders about, apparently unconcerned by the flower incident and seeing the flowers as just something else for her to freeze and play with. After being scared by Yuuka Kazami, she ends up in Muenzuka, where she gets lectured and attacked by Eiki Shiki, Yamaxanadu. Because of this, she started to reflect on death and the future until Aya Shameimaru convinced her to focus in the present.
Much like in Perfect Cherry Blossom, Cirno is the stage 1 midboss of Double Dealing Character, and still did not have any good reason to attack the heroines other than that they were there.

Cirno is one of the protagonists of this game, and is most notably wearing a tan. Okina Matara gives random people in Gensokyo power without their knowledge with the purpose of bringing out their best to see if they are worthy of being Okina's servant, or alternatively, to merely cause a show of power. Due to this, Cirno remained strong even in the midsummer heat, which caused Cirno to fall into delusions of grandeur and attempt to "conquer" Gensokyo and become its new "Supreme Overlord". She fights her way through various inhabitants of Gensokyo until she eventually ventures into the Land of the Backdoor and encounters Okina Matara, where she reveals to Cirno that her tan is merely a result of her overflowing with magic energy due to her supercharged rampage beginning to spread to her appearance, and that she won't be able to hold herself together for much longer if she continues on, advising her to stop before her sense of self completely breaks down.

The Three Fairies of Light (Hikari no San-Yousei), or the Three Fairies (San-Yousei) for short, also called the Three Mischievous Fairies, are a small group of fairies composed of Sunny Milk, Luna Child, and Star Sapphire. They are known for causing mischief to humans by playing pranks on them using their powers. They are the protagonists of the Touhou Sangetsusei manga series, and the antagonists of Great Fairy Wars.
The Giant Toad (Dai Gama) is a toad that lives in the Giant Toad's Pond who first appeared in Cirno's article Bohemian Archive in Japanese Red. In the article, it was said that Cirno was freezing frogs as usual, so this toad decided to punish her by eating her. However, Cirno escapes by freezing the toad's stomach, making it spit her out. Neither had any major injuries.
Considering the divine nature of the pond, it is likely that the toad acts as its guardian. Unless provoked, the Giant Toad will remain benevolent and gentle. Providing it with an offering will ensure that humans who visit the pond will have a safe trip home. On the walk home, a seemingly ordinary toad will follow you down to the base of the Youkai Mountain. This toad is actually a subordinate of the Giant Toad and is a sign of its approval. No youkai would dare to attack a human being followed by the Giant Toad's watchful eyes. The toad is the size of two humans.

The Myouren Temple (Myourenji), also the Palanquin Ship (Seirensen) or Treasure Ship Above the Clouds (Unjō no Takarabune), was originally a ship capable of sailing through the sky, where it was landed directly on top of the Hall of Dreams' Great Mausoleum and renovated into a temple. In its original ship form, it was capable of traveling to Makai. The temple can still transform back into its ship form whenever Byakuren Hijiri chooses to.
The Palanquin Ship was created by Byakuren Hijiri and given to Minamitsu Murasa in order to win over her trust. The design itself is based on the ship that Minamitsu died on. It was eventually buried into the Underworld after Byakuren was sealed away by humans, but popped up on the surface of Gensokyo during the events of Subterranean Animism. It was temporarily used as a simple granary, but was later renovated into a temple which was named after Byakuren's brother, Myouren Hijiri.
The temple was purposely landed bang above the Hall of Dreams' Great Mausoleum so that Byakuren could keep an eye on the seal on Toyosatomimi no Miko; as a saint of humans, it's clear the two would naturally be at odds. Ironically, this choice ended up being exactly why the seal was broken in the first place. After the intervention of the main character in the events of Ten Desires, the now-revived "residents" of the Mausoleum appear to have been pacified for the moment.

The Hakurei Shrine (Hakurei Jinja) is a small, dilapidated Shinto shrine located on the Great Hakurei Barrier on the eastern edge of Gensokyo. It's a key location that has appeared in many of the official games' prologues, stages, in character endings and in other official literature by ZUN. It's the home of the Touhou Project's protagonist: Reimu Hakurei.
The shrine has become a popular hangout for all sorts of youkai who Reimu and company defeat in the course of the games. However, because of this, very few (normal) humans come to the shrine, and even fewer (if any at all) leave donations, but because it is a place where human faith gathers, Aunn Komano tends to guard the place without being asked.
The Hakurei Shrine was once the only shrine in Gensokyo, but the Moriya Shrine has since settled on the Youkai Mountain. Also adding to religious competition is the Myouren Temple and the Hall of Dreams' Great Mausoleum; the former is a Buddhist temple led by Byakuren Hijiri and the latter is held by Taoists run by Toyosatomimi no Miko‎.
From Wild and Horned Hermit chapter 8, it's known that there is money scattered around the shrine. Although the ones found by Reimu may have been planted there by the Unnamed Kuda-gitsune. It's later seen that like all shrines, the Hakurei Shrine offers omamori. Although with the Hakurei Shrine's god in question, it's unknown if the omamori would even provide anyone with divine power.
The Hakurei Shrine existed long before the sealing of Gensokyo in 1885, and is known in the outside world as well. Before the existence of Gensokyo, the shrine was maintained by the Miyadeguchi family, making it likely that Mizuchi Miyadeguchi is in someway linked to the shrine itself.
The very existence of both Reimu Hakurei and her shrine ensures the continued existence of Gensokyo by protecting and maintaining the Great Hakurei Barrier, thus making it one of the most important locations in the Touhou Project.

All of the members of Three Fairies of Light (Sunny Milk, Luna Child and Star Sapphire) are both a friend and an enemy of Cirno. This is due to them joining forces to make pranks since they met, but also declaring a "fairy war" against the ice fairy in Great Fairy Wars.
Eternity Larva:
Eternity and Cirno are implied to have known each other before the events of Hidden Star in Four Seasons. Eternity notices Cirno's tan before they fight to see who the summer belongs to. Eternity is also the fairy she tells her adventures to in Cirno's ending.
Minor Relationships:
Daiyousei: Daiyousei is first seen (presumably) associated with Cirno in Strange and Bright Nature Deity Chapter 13 when both of them were playing hide and seek. After meeting and talking with the Three Fairies of Light, Cirno appears to have completely forgotten about Daiyousei. She was later seen attacking Cirno in Great Fairy Wars.
Despite Daiyousei being associated with Cirno through multiple cameos in official manga, ZUN stated that he never thought about what their relationship really is.
Letty Whiterock:
Nothing is known about Cirno's relationship with Letty Whiterock. She appears to dislike being grouped up with her as she explains her superiority when interviewed by Aya Shameimaru in Bohemian Archive in Japanese Red.
Reimu Hakurei:
Reimu Hakurei is one of Cirno's targets for her pranks in Oriental Sacred Place and Great Fairy Wars. She later helped the Three Fairies of Light in supporting the Hakurei Shrine against Myouren Temple, alongside other youkai such as Rumia, Mystia and Wriggle.
Giant Toad:
The Giant Toad is a toad that once ate Cirno because she was freezing all the other toads.
