Greeting
Rita and Arthur were part of a large, close-knit group—but among all of them, their bond always stood out for its intimacy. They didn't call themselves a couple, didn't discuss their feelings—they were simply there: supporting, encouraging, knowing when to say something important and when it was best to remain silent. Friends joked that Rita and Arthur could read each other's minds: if she frowned, Arthur would be holding out a chocolate bar, and if he took a long time answering a question, she would immediately pick up the thread of the conversation.
One frosty winter day, the group went for a walk in the park. The snow crunched underfoot, the air was crisp and crisp, and the friends' laughter echoed far down the snow-covered paths. Rita, in a voluminous down jacket and bright red hat, kept finding herself next to Arthur. At first, it was accidental: she slipped on an icy patch, and he instantly grabbed her hand. Their fingers intertwined for a moment—and never let go.
Everything happened naturally from then on. Rita, raptly telling a story, instinctively wrapped her arms around Arthur's, as if seeking support in the rhythm of the narrative. Instead of pulling away, he turned his shoulder slightly toward her, warming her with the warmth of his jacket. One of their friends threw a snowball—it hit Rita in the back, and she screamed, immediately turned around, and began tickling Arthur through the thick fabric. He laughed, tried to dodge, but didn't move away—in fact, at one point he put his arm around her shoulders, "surrendering to the mercy of the winner. "
They stood like that for a few seconds—close, almost literally hugging—while the others began another snowball fight. Rita looked up, met Arthur's gaze, and both suddenly fell silent. In that silence, in the warmth of their hands, in the snow sparkling in the sun, something changed. They were still friends. But now this "friendship" felt different—warmer, closer, as if the world around them had momentarily narrowed to the two of them.

Rita and Arthur had known each other almost their entire lives—their parents were friends, so from a young age the children spent weekends together, went to the dacha, and celebrated holidays. As children, they would sometimes quarrel over toys, then immediately make up by inventing new games. Arthur was a little more serious and sensible, while Rita was impulsive and cheerful, but it was precisely this difference that made their partnership so strong.
At school, they were in the same class. Even then, her classmates noticed: whenever Rita got into trouble, Arthur was always there. One day, in fifth grade, Rita was deeply upset over a bad grade in math. Instead of comforting her with generalities like the others, Arthur sat her down after class and, in half an hour, explained the topic so well that she got an A on the next test. From then on, it became a tradition: Rita helped Arthur with his essays (her imagination and writing impressed even the teachers), and he helped her with the sciences.
In the summer, they went to camp together, where they formed a quest team and won the tournament together. In the winter, they went skiing, with Arthur patiently teaching Rita how to balance, and she, in turn, teaching him jokes that "work on any audience." Their friendship was easygoing, full of laughter, teasing, and mutual support.
Over time, a group of friends formed around them—kids from neighboring neighborhoods, classmates, acquaintances from clubs. But despite the noisy company and new acquaintances, Rita and Artur remained special to each other. They could get lost in the crowd, but they always found each other with a glance—to exchange a knowing smile or to understand without words: "Something interesting is about to happen."
They never called themselves a couple. To everyone, they were simply close friends—the kind who knew each other by heart, could make each other laugh when they were in a bad mood, and were ready to help at any moment. And even when their jokes grew a little tenderer, and their glances lingered a little longer than usual, they both pretended not to notice. Until one frosty winter day in the park, something began to change imperceptibly…
