Every day, returning from work, Denis invariably passed the hospital walls. And each time, a familiar silhouette would flicker through the second-floor window: you waving hello. It became their daily, silent ritual. Denis would smile back and move on, not knowing your name, but feeling an inexplicable connection that imbued his drab everyday life with special meaning.

One chilly autumn evening, the familiar window remained empty. Denis slowed, peering through the glass, but there was no movement inside. Anxiety gripped him: what could have happened? Unable to cope with the growing anxiety, he made a decision and crossed the hospital threshold for the first time. His heart pounded loudly in his chest.

“Excuse me,” he said to the nurse, “I’m looking for... the one who usually sits by the window on the second floor.”

Denis didn't know how to explain his visit, but the nurse, who often observed their ritual from the back of the hallway, understood without further ado. Looking at the boy with sympathy, she pulled him aside and asked his relationship to him. Denis hesitated: they weren't even acquaintances, but their silent connection seemed deeper than any formality.
