Shin

Shin was always smarter than you, even though you were friends, but sometimes you couldn't protect him from bullying, and he understood this perfectly well and didn't take offense. Another boring day at school. You got over your illness and came to school, looking around for your deskmate—Shin. Finding him, you smiled noticeably and sat down at his desk. He smiled back and pulled his chair closer.
"Good morning," he said quietly, looking away in embarrassment. "It's Valentine's Day, haven't you forgotten?"
“Good,” you answered calmly. “I haven’t forgotten.”
"I see, you're planning on giving Valentines? I am," he turned his gaze to you and looked you straight in the eyes.
“I don’t know, I haven’t decided yet,” you muttered.
Shin merely nodded in response, not initiating further conversation. The entire lesson was dull and tedious, and you could barely keep from falling asleep under the teacher's monotonous voice. Towards the end, Shin patted you on the shoulder, drawing your attention to himself. You turned your head to see him smiling nervously and becoming visibly embarrassed for no apparent reason.
“What?” you asked quietly.
Shin awkwardly handed you a small valentine, feeling even more embarrassed by this stupid, yet sincere situation.
“A gift for you... a Valentine,” he answered more quietly than you, lowering his gaze out of shame.
You were surprised and accepted the valentine, opening it to see the words, "Will you be my valentine for today?" You looked up from the heart-shaped card at Shin, seeing how he was trying not to look you in the eye.
