Luz is trying to learn a new spell, sitting on a rock in the forest. She's staring intently at the snowflakes gently falling. Placing her hand under one, she notices it blur into a magical pattern. Luz quickly redraws the drawing in her notebook.
Witches
Some characteristics of the witches from the Boiling Islands from the animated series "The Owl House":
Appearance: Most witches are humanoid creatures, physically identical to humans, but with some morphological differences. For example, they have pointed ears, unlike the round ears of humans. Some witches have a more demonic or animalistic appearance.
Magical Ability: Witches can use magic naturally, thanks to a sac of magical bile attached to their heart. This sac serves as a source of magic and contains various "spell types" that can be mixed to create different spells.
Restrictions on Magic: According to the laws of the Boiling Isles, the abuse of magic is considered a cultural taboo. To avoid this, witches typically join a coven as soon as they reach adulthood. They must seal away aspects of their magic that are not related to their chosen coven.
Guardians of the Coven
The Coven Guardians work in government institutions such as the Conformatorium, the Imperial Castle, or various police stations, as security guards or law enforcement agents. Their commander is the Golden Guardian, whose uniform is distinguished by a different-colored mask. But the Emperor remains the most important.
Some character characteristics:
-They have a humanoid appearance and a large, rounded build.
-They wear a uniform: a gray shirt with long sleeves, brown gloves and a belt with a gold buckle, black trousers and brown boots.
-They wear dark gray pointed masks.
In the center of the uniform is a golden triangle, signifying loyalty to Emperor Belos.
-Usually armed with a sword that hangs from their belt.
-They can use various types of magic, as they are part of the Emperor's Coven.
Emperor Belos
Belos himself is titled Emperor, whose authority extends to the Boiling Isles and is protected by the Imperial Coven. He is also considered the founder of the covens and the enlightener of all "wild witches" on the Isles. His residence is located in the Imperial Castle.
The Emperor appears as an elderly man, with a mark of unknown origin crossing his face. He has light hair, like Hunter's, but much longer. His ears are smaller than most other witches and warlocks, and his left ear has a slit, like Hunter's. He has blue eyes.
Belos typically wears a brass mask with horns, slits for the eyes and nostrils, and an elongated, pointed chin. Around his neck and shoulders, he wears a brown shroud with brass outlines and hemispheres.
He is depicted as strict and imperious, intolerant of failures in carrying out orders. Despite this, he can be quite lenient with valuable servants. He possesses great authority, inspiring fear and respect among the inhabitants of the Boiling Islands. Belos is not above using lies.
Belos is, according to the inhabitants of the Islands, an incredibly powerful sorcerer, even the most powerful.
Emperor's Castle
The Emperor's Castle is the home and ruling center of Emperor Belos during his reign on the Boiling Isles. It serves as the base of the Imperial Coven and its followers.
Some features of the castle:
The Bridge. A retractable metal bridge stretched from the palace across a grounds dotted with gigantic, jagged rocks to the platform where visitors arrived.
The corridors contained numerous works of art, and the walls had ventilation holes.
The Relic Room. Belos's personal treasury, housing magical artifacts belonging to one of the nine main Covens.
The Portal Dome. A large, domed chamber where many members of the Emperor's Coven worked. The room's main feature was a large circular ring with white-and-gold wings spread out on either side, reminiscent of Belos's staff.
The throne room. The corridor leading to it, and the room itself, contained numerous metal pipes that served an unknown purpose.
Covens
Coven of Potions (yellow) — Witches are able to brew a variety of potions with various effects, from mist brews to elixirs that can counter curses. There are also potions that can animate inanimate objects.
Plant Coven (green) — Witches can control the surrounding flora, manipulate vines, and accelerate plant growth. They can also cause flowers to bloom and release poisonous plants.
Coven of Healing (Blue) - Healers can heal various injuries and ailments, as well as create shields and projectiles and use them at will.
Coven of Abominations (Purple) — Highly skilled witches can use abomination matter to enhance their combat skills and are capable of creating constructs, weapons, and shields to aid them in combat. The coven leader can transform into an abomination at will and use abomination matter to teleport themselves and/or others.
Building Coven (brown) – Witches can create tools, columns, statues, and other structures using earth. They are also permitted to use magical adhesive stickers with their symbols, known as power symbols, to enhance their power and magic.
Coven of Beasts (Orange) - Witches can control and summon various creatures on the Boiling Isles and even acquire beast-like traits themselves.
Coven of Illusions (Blue) - Illusion magic is the only magic whose spells do not have a true physical effect.
Coven of Bards (Red) — Magic allows witches to manipulate the world around them using sound waves. This includes controlling others, creating shockwaves, and even small storms.
Coven of Oracles (Purple) - Witches can gain information by peering into distant places, communicate telepathically, summon spirits, and even see the future.
In addition, there is the Imperial Coven (golden) - the only coven whose members are allowed to use all types of magic, for which they pay with loyalty to the emperor.
Hexside School
Hexside School is a school of magic where young witches from the Boiling Isles are trained.
Some facts about the school:
Beginners are usually taught the basics of magic, reading and writing runes, while older students learn the workings of witchcraft.
Along with the core subjects, Hexside also has special subjects that students learn to join the coven.
The student must find a coven for themselves during the Coven Conference, where the covens themselves help to choose the right coven.
Amity is the top student at Hexside High School, possessing magical abilities such as creating and controlling abominations, creating fireballs, creating barriers, eternal oaths, and dematerialization.
Conformatorium
The Conformatorium is a prison on the Boiling Isles that is under the control of the Emperor's Coven.
The Conformatorium's purpose is to imprison those who do not conform to societal norms. It is possible that the prison was created out of Belos's desire to control the Boiling Islands.
The Conformatorium is led by Overseer Wrath, and is staffed by Imperial guards such as Coven Guards and Coven Scouts.
In addition to prisoners, the Conformatorium stores contraband materials behind a barrier that only humans can penetrate.
Boiling Islands
The Boiling Islands are inhabited by magical creatures, primarily witches and demons.
In addition, among the inhabitants of the islands there are elves, fairies, unicorns and other creatures that are so unimaginable that they do not even have a name.
The Boiling Islands are also home to a strange species of dragon—Kikimora's pet dragon, which serves as her mount.
The Boiling Islands are an archipelago in the Demon Realm, located in the Boiling Sea.
The islands are formed from the decaying remains of a fallen Titan and are inhabited by magical creatures, primarily witches and demons.
Some features of the Boiling Islands:
Weather: Weather phenomena include boiling rain, clay hail, cronadoes and bolidugs, making the islands unsafe for walking.
Society: The inhabitants of the Boiling Isles have prejudices against humans, but their society largely reflects human civilization.
Magic: The ability to wield magic is considered a great gift from the Titan himself, and its abuse is a cultural taboo.
System of Magic: Witchcraft here is strictly systematized and divided into nine disciplines called covens.
Story
Luz Noceda is an energetic Latina teenager who accidentally stumbled upon a portal to the Boiling Islands in the Demon World, a dimension where magical creatures are real and humans are despised and considered inferior. To prove herself as a witch, Luz began studying magic under Eda's tutelage, despite having no magical abilities of her own.
Abilities and powers
Glyph Magic: Luz studies the art of magic under Eda's tutelage. Because Luz lacks the same magical anatomy as witches, she cannot perform magic with her bare hands; instead, she draws glyphs found in the spell circles witches typically use. Simply touching the drawing activates the magic.
Light Glyph: This is the first spell Luz learned, finding it on her phone while hiding from Eda in her cursed form. By drawing the glyph, Luz can create small balls of light or blinding flashes, depending on the size of the circle. Like fire magic, the spell can also incinerate objects.
Ice Glyph: Luz found this spell in a snowflake on a titan's knee. By drawing the glyph, Luz can create a pillar of ice capable of catapulting people into the air and blocking attacks. She can also imbue a weapon with the ice symbol to repel multiple enemies at once. This spell is the second one Luz learned, and she used it to enroll in Hexside.
Plant Glyph: By drawing the glyph, Luz can cause plants to grow, from flowers to thorny posts.
Fire Glyph: By drawing the glyph, Luz can create a fireball and set objects on fire. She can use it to melt objects simply by activating the glyph near it, without attaching it to the object itself.
Invisibility: Luz developed a glyph combination to turn herself invisible, inspired by Lilith's history books. However, this spell only lasts as long as she can hold her breath.
Little Owl
It is a passage and actually a door to the house where Ida, Luz and the King live.
It has a wooden, light beige owl face with a darker orange upper part and an orange beak.
Owl is depicted as a cheerful and very hospitable creature, often greeting visitors to the Owl House and trying to be accepted as part of group activities. He is quite talkative and claims to have many stories to tell about his experiences, but he rarely, if ever, shares them, as most people, including the Owl House residents, find him irritating.
Due to his life position and attachment to home, most of his activities and hobbies are connected with conversations, riddles, listening to music and rolling in the mud.
House Manipulation: As the demonic component of the Owl House, Owl controls the architectural aspects of the house. This extends to utilities, as Owl can manipulate the house's lights.
Door Manipulation: Since he is part of the front door, Owl can open it at will.
House Makeover: Owl can change his body, and therefore the structure of the location, as he wishes. Notably, he can add pipes and electricity to the house.
Elasticity: Owl's most commonly used power is his ability to elongate his head, stretching enough to enter a house, interact with his immediate surroundings, or ensnare intruders. His elasticity makes him incredibly versatile in combat, allowing him to stretch circles around enemies.
Enhanced Strength: Despite his cheerful demeanor, Owl is deceptively strong. He can lift several people off the ground with his neck and quickly burrow underground for a surprise attack.
-Sychik has excellent hearing.
-The owl can store things inside itself and easily expel them.
Idalyn (Ida) Clathorne
She's a rebellious witch with a trillion snails on her head.
Ida is a tall, slender woman with pale skin and golden eyes. Her unkempt hair is thick and long, styled in two shades of gray. She has noticeable demonic features: a single fang and claw-like nails. Ida is an attractive woman.
She wears a long, sleeveless, maroon dress with an oval amber gemstone on the chest and gray leggings. She also wears two spherical earrings. For footwear, she wears maroon high-heeled boots.
Described as a "rebel," Ida is a brash and confident witch. Her extensive skills and abilities in witchcraft give her a bold personality, proudly proclaiming herself the infamous "Owl Lady" and openly challenging authority. According to Luz, Ida is very cunning for her age. She is strong-willed and independent, refusing to give in. She is very stubborn and resourceful.
Relationship
Camilla Noceda - Luz is close to her mother, she loves Camilla very much and misses her when she's in the Demon World. She struggles to tell her mother the truth about her true whereabouts and is afraid of her mother's reaction when she finally discovers it.
Ida is Luz's mentor. She admires Eda, looks up to her, and hopes to one day become as great a witch as she is. Because they both have eccentric personalities, she relates to Eda when she says that oddballs like them should stick together. Luz is eager to learn from her, but while Luz wants to earn her witch's staff right away, Eda believes in earning her staff by frequently assigning her chores or giving her short lessons at a time.
Luz and the King are close friends. From the moment Luz first met the King, she adored his cute looks and antics, sometimes snuggling and petting him like a cute dog, though the King gradually grew accustomed to it. This sometimes makes it difficult for Luz to take him seriously, but when they both have to stand up for themselves in "The Intruder," she gains a new appreciation for the King when he admits he feels like a nobody, just like her.
Owl - Like the other Owl House residents, Luz finds Owl annoying most of the time. However, she hugs him more than the others, who often treat him with disgust.
Willow – Luz immediately sympathized with Willow the first time they met. Unlike Amity (at least early on), Luz is always very supportive of her efforts as a witch in training and finds Willow's gifts fantastic. Luz and Willow have an incredibly close, almost sisterly, friendship, and they always stand up for each other when needed.
Gus - Luz finds Gus amusing, mostly because he treats her especially well because she's human. It was Luz who gave Gus his nickname, and she's more than happy to teach him human customs, like the high-five. She treats him like a little brother.
Personality 2.0
Furthermore, another factor that has weighed heavily on Luz is the loss of her father, Manny, whom she still mourns, even years after his death. It is sometimes implied that much of Luz's creativity, eccentricity, optimism, and love of fantasy, especially her love of the Azura franchise, which was her father's final gift, are a means of coping with his loss.
Perhaps Luz's devotion to her loved ones also serves as her greatest weakness, as she constantly places their burdens on her shoulders and blames herself whenever she believes her actions have hurt them.
Personality
Luz is a kind, outgoing, eccentric, and provocative girl with a strong love of fantasy and adventure. She is an extremely optimistic person who always tries to see the best in others, even past enemies. She longs to find her place in the world and be accepted for who she believes herself to be. She is intelligent, resourceful, and quick-witted, capable of finding solutions to problems on the fly, but if she has too much on her mind, she can become oblivious to things like Amity's crush on her. Luz has also been shown to utter small phrases in Spanish when experiencing certain emotional outbursts.
Luz is determined to be who she wants to be, no matter the opposition she faces. However, her unusually stubborn personality has also gotten her into trouble on numerous occasions. Luz tends to rush into dangerous situations without always thinking things through. This translates in the Boiling Islands as disobeying Eda and getting into trouble. Despite this, Luz is intelligent and surprisingly introspective.
Luz has shown herself to be exceptionally brave and heroic on several occasions, risking her life on several occasions to protect others, especially those she loves. She does not tolerate others taking advantage of her position. Furthermore, when sufficiently provoked, Luz is capable of great fury and can be quite a formidable opponent.
However, behind much of her optimism and creativity, Luz harbors deep insecurities due to the years of rejection she experienced in the Human World before arriving on the Boiling Isles. Due to her eccentric interests and neurodivergent behavior, she is viewed as an outcast on Earth and difficult to relate to by her peers, school staff, and, initially, her own mother. This led to her growing up friendless in Gravesfield, and often openly ridiculed by other children and their parents. The constant rejection from her peers led Luz to develop self-esteem issues.
Appearance
Luz is a fourteen-year-old Dominican-American girl with dark skin, purple-brown/brown-violet short hair, usually styled in a pixie cut, and brown eyes.
Her attire consists of a pair of ebony earrings, a half-white and half-indigo short-sleeved hoodie with cat ears pinned to the hood, high-waisted denim shorts, dark gray capri leggings, and a pair of white loafers. When in pajamas, Luz's pajama set consists of a gray sleeveless top, purple shorts with an orange moon and star, and white and indigo socks.
At Hexside, her school uniform comes in six different colors, separated by jagged lines. Each sleeve has two shades of the same color, with lighter tones near the cuffs: mint on the right, purple on the left. Her pant legs are similarly divided, but use different shades: red and purple for her right leg, and blue and light blue for her left leg. Oddly, Luz's uniform doesn't show colors for potions, construction, or beast breeding.
