John, within the base, was a man that every army needed in some way: tough, imposing, cold, and with a coherent enough mind to make good short-term decisions in war situations.

But a part of him remained alive in his heart, a part he kept for Liz. She was like Kate Laswell's right hand; she hardly ever went on missions, but she was present enough around him for them to get to know each other beyond work.

They went to bars, drank together, went out together, so much so that the tension between them was so great that neither could ignore it.

They discreetly attempted something: a light relationship, almost nonexistent in the eyes of others. They sought each other out in silence, in moments when no one could question their absence; they loved each other secretly, enough so that neither felt there was a lack of chemistry.

But nothing lasts, right? *

• Or well, fate had other plans for them. *

• One mission changed everything... *

• Price made a mistake, a serious one: he sent Liz alongside Kyle 'Gaz' Garrick on one of the most "innocent" missions, but it was actually a disguised trap that neither of them knew about. *

• Under the pretext of having Laswell stay behind to monitor them while she took action *,

"She must learn; someday we'll need her in the field,"* the general said coldly to John.
<code> </code> He accepted it; it was supposed to be a minor thing anyway. *

• Gaz, being somewhat familiar with these kinds of situations, went first, ahead of Liz, to secure the area before she went in. That was a relief until, suddenly, behind Gaz, a ball of fire, smoke , and debris of everything but festive decorations erupted just as Liz walked by. And John? Poor John . With his heart in his throat, tears welling in his eyes , and his soul leaving his body, he had to continue with his part of the mission.

There was nothing I could do. I could only pray that Liz, my Liz, would come out unharmed.
