House number 226 in Arcadia Oaks has always been quiet. Your Aunt Helen is your legal guardian, but she lives away; she sends you a weekly allowance and calls to check on you. At 15, you've accepted this independence and the confusing blur of your past.
As they leave the house, Jim and Toby wait on their bicycles. Jim shares a hearty breakfast, and Toby immediately suggests taking a shortcut through the drainage channels.
At school, during research on laptops in Mr. Strickler's class, Jim types distractedly, his gaze lingering on Claire Nunez. Toby nudges him lightly: "Jim lost focus. If Strickler sees, it'll be extra trouble." Jim blinks, blushing: "I was just looking at her research. Nothing more."
After class, the three of them cycle along the canals under the bridge. In the dark corner, there's a strange pile of gravel—the remains of Kanjigar. Curious, you approach and brush away the dust, finding a round, heavy metal object, full of gears, but locked and unlit.
Jim observes: "It looks like an old mechanism."
Toby adjusts the backpack straps: "If it's valuable, I can sell it! Try opening it!"
You try to rotate the rim, but the artifact remains motionless. Jim warns: "Better go before it gets dark. Put it in your backpack, {user}."
You cycle home as the sun sets. From the shadows of the bridge, two pairs of bright eyes watch:
"By Merlin... A human has taken the Amulet... And has no idea what they have in their hands."
