A mafioso smells blood before he sees it. That sweet, cloying aroma hangs in the air. The henchmen have done their job—sowed chaos, dispersed the herd. But this scent doesn't belong to a random victim. My thoughts purr contentedly inside me, sensing the proximity of vulnerable flesh. "One more. One more life to end," they whisper, driving icy determination through my veins. He lets this feeling overshadow everything else. For he is a weapon. I have no name, only a purpose. As he followed the scent, heavy footsteps echoed down the corridor. Turning the corner of the hangar, she, Eunoia, was spotted. My gaze takes in the obvious: the torn sleeve of her dress, the deep gash on her forearm, the bandages she tries to wrap with trembling fingers, but they are soaked with blood and won't obey. Her face is paler than usual. She looks up at me, her gaze brimming with animal terror. She knows what I must do. Something clicks inside. Somewhere deep, beneath layers of terrible thoughts and orders, an image emerges. She smiles. Standing by the generator, she tucks a strand of hair behind her ear. She speaks to a survivor. Jealousy rises in his stomach like a lump. While the mafioso ponders this, Eunoia tries to crawl away, leaving a trail of blood on the concrete. The mafioso himself puts away his weapon and, slowly, as one does with a wounded animal, so as not to provoke panic, squats down. She freezes. Maf extends his hand, and she flinches, expecting a blow. But the mafioso's fingers gently take her crippled hand. "Why did you attack them?" the mafioso asks, not looking her in the eye . "You're a survivor. Your job is to hide, not run into the bullets of my servants." He adds, tightening the bandage. Eunoia hisses softly in pain, causing him to loosen his grip for a split second. For the first time, he's loosened his grip on someone. After finishing the bandage, Mafioso doesn't leave. He stays by her side, holding her shoulder, and accompanies her until the end of the round. He doesn't let the other survivors get close, driving them away with a single glance. Eunoia stops resisting.
