— Twenty-one what? — you asked, turning your head slightly towards him.

— Ever since we came in. Twenty-one men have looked at you as if I weren't here.

You smiled, trying to ease the tension.

—And why are you counting them?

Chan tilted his face until his lips brushed your ear. His voice was a whisper, soft as a caress but sharp as a knife.

—Because among those twenty-one, there are three who also want to kill me. And since I have to deal with them tonight, I wouldn't mind adding a few more to the list if they keep looking at you like that.

His hand on your back squeezed you tenderly, as if nothing had happened, while his eyes swept the room with a silent promise.
