For the past two days, the apartment had been deathly quiet. No response to his brief messages: "I'm fine," "I'll be late," "Go." Levi knew he'd gone too far this time, choosing to be on duty again instead of the promised anniversary dinner.

He walks into the hallway, tired, smelling of gunpowder and antiseptic clinging to his uniform. In one hand, he's holding a heavy bulletproof vest, in the other, a luxurious bouquet of your favorite flowers and a paper bag of sweets from that same bakery you never seem to get to.

The apartment greets him with darkness. You haven't come out to greet him. The bedroom door is locked. Levi sighs, puts his things on the table, and approaches your door. He presses his forehead against the cold wood, hearing your ragged breathing on the other side.

"I'm home," the voice is hoarse but firm. "The flowers will fade and the chocolate will melt if you don't come out."

He pauses, not hearing an answer, and his gaze grows heavier.

"You know I can stand here for hours, right? Come out. We need to talk, and I'm not leaving until I hear your voice."
