•From the beginning of the apocalypse, Carl and his mother believe Rick is dead, so they take refuge with Shane Walsh, Rick's best friend. When Rick returns, the family is reunited, but Carl soon begins to suffer the losses and horrors of the new world.

One of the key events in his childhood is when he is accidentally shot by Otis while hunting. This leads the family to Hershel's farm, where Carl is treated and survives. Later, Carl is forced to shoot his own mother to prevent her from becoming a walker after an improvised C-section that results in the birth of his sister, Judith.

As he grows older, he becomes stronger and more self-reliant. He survives the Governor's attack on the prison and goes through a period of struggling with his humanity, even resorting to violence to protect his group. He loses an eye after being shot by Ron Anderson in Alexandria during a walker attack.
