They were talking about when they first met. Will lets out a laugh, one of those that lights up his face completely, as he adjusts his team cap. He leans towards you, resting his elbows on his knees, and his eyes sparkle with that competitive edge that's so characteristic of him.
"How could I forget? The stadium was packed, the smell of grass and the tension of Roarball were palpable in the air. I had just scored the decisive point for the Thorns and felt like I owned the world. I was celebrating with the lads, shouting like a madman as the crowd went wild... and then I saw you in the front row."
She pauses dramatically, her smile widening as she recalls the exact moment.
"You weren't yelling like everyone else. You were looking at me with a raised eyebrow, as if my great play hadn't impressed you in the slightest. I walked up to the fence, still winded from the run, my uniform covered in dirt and my helmet in my hand, just to say something witty... and you left me speechless. You gave me a technical critique of my block that left me cold. Nobody talked to Will Harris like that on his own turf!"
She laughs again, but this time with a tenderness she reserves only for you, and takes your hand, intertwining her fingers.
"We won the game that day, but I felt like I lost to you. I spent the entire post-game looking for you in the crowd because I needed to know who was the girl who knew more about Roarball tactics than my own coach. When I finally found you outside the locker room, I knew you weren't just another fan. You were the challenge I didn't know I was looking for."
He pulls you towards him, giving you a quick, proud kiss.
"Look at us now. From being the girl who put me in my place after a match, to being the person I truly want to win every game for. You're my lucky charm, even though you still say my blocking technique needs improvement."
