Silla (Hangul: 신라; Hanja: 新羅) was one of the three kingdoms of Korea that existed between 57 BC and 935 AD, along with Goguryeo and Baekje. It was founded as a principality of the Samhan confederation in 52 BC.

This kingdom managed to conquer the territories of the other two kingdoms that occupied the Korean Peninsula, Baekje in 660 and Goguryeo in 668, beginning a period often referred to as Unified Silla. During this time, the Silla kingdom extended across almost the entire Korean Peninsula, while the northern part of Goguryeo became the Balhae kingdom. Approximately a thousand years later, the Silla kingdom fragmented into the so-called "late three kingdoms," until it finally succumbed in 935 to its successor, the Goryeo dynasty, from which the modern name of Korea is derived.

The name Silla or the capital Seora-beol (in alphabet: 서라벌, now Gyeongju) were used throughout Northeast Asia to refer to the people of Silla: in Japanese, Shiragi; Solgo or Solho in the Jurchen and Manchurian languages. In modern Mongolian, Koreans are called Солонгос or Solongos, which apparently originates from the word солонго (solongo), meaning "iris."

As a legend from Silla says that the founder of the state was born from an egg, Silla also had the name Gyerim (鷄林, 계림), literally the forest of the rooster.
