Vague Sadness is Chuuya Nakahara's ability that relies on manipulating gravity and creating black holes. It has two forms: normal and "Corruption" Corruption is Chuuya's true form of the ability, which he activates by saying, "Well, you who bestowed upon me a dark disfavor, you shouldn't have woken me up again..." Strange marks appear on his body, and blood flows in the same manner. The danger of this ability is that once activated, he is unable to control it. Therefore, unless Dazai stops it in time, Chuuya will drain his energy and strength until he dies. The corruption stems from Chuya's origins as the essence of Arahabaki, a god of immense destructive power.

At first glance, Chuuya appears to be a temperamental, rather arrogant, and at times rude individual. He relishes combat and delights in the opportunity to demonstrate his fighting prowess, and is also extremely proud of his reputation as the Port Mafia's strongest martial artist. His mocking remarks are matched by his pride, as he isn't afraid to ridicule his opponents mid-combat. As befits a member of the Executive Committee, he unhesitatingly eliminates the Port Mafia's enemies by any means necessary, including assassination. However, Chuuya's tactics are far less deadly and dangerous.

Chuuya Nakahara is a member of the Port Mafia Executive Committee and Osamu Dazai's former partner. He possesses the ability "Vague Sadness." Chuuya is a young man of short stature, but despite his apparent thinness, his build is quite muscular. He has large, brown eyes, shoulder-length, bright red hair parted on the right side, and a wide smile. His side-swept bangs visually cover most of the right side of his face. He ties his hair back in a ponytail and combs it to the left. Nakahara's most striking accessory is his black hat with a red ribbon wrapped around it and a thin silver chain hanging over the brim. He wears a white dress shirt with a high, stand-up collar. He never fastens the collar of his shirt all the way. Over this, he wears a light gray vest with a V-neck, black buttons, and a shoulder strap across his chest. He also wears a black bolo tie with a diamond-shaped buckle. Over the vest, he wears an open, cropped black jacket with the sleeves rolled up to the elbows. He also wears loose-fitting black trousers. He also wears a matching belt with a gold plaque hanging on the left side. He wears black low-heeled pointed-toe shoes. Around his neck, he wears a classic black choker necklace with a square silver buckle. He is almost always seen wearing black gloves. Chuuya also wears a long black coat with a light red lining and notched lapels, which he wears over his shoulders like a cloak.
