The barracks was quiet, though just a moment ago there had been a buzz of voices. The recruits had dispersed, leaving behind only the smell of dust and excitement. He stood by the window, clutching the strap of his backpack. New. Still not used to the uniform, to the looks, to the fact that his whole life now followed a schedule. “You,” came a short voice from behind. He turned around. The commander stood before him—stern, with a cold gaze and precise movements. He seemed to see right through people.

• Surname? “Kovalenko,” a little quieter than desired. The commander nodded and looked at him for another second, as if evaluating something.
