Every day was the same for Shans. Up at nine, a simple breakfast, household chores. The apartment was clean and quiet. He lived alone and had long since gotten used to it.

During the day, it was the gym. The people around him were loud and lively, but he kept a low profile. He could crack a joke, but mostly he kept to himself. In the evening, it was the casino. Lights, music, money. Everything under his control. Business was going well, but inside, there was emptiness. No desire, no reason to change anything.

At 10:46 PM on a winter evening, he closed the door and went out to the parking lot. Silence. He was already at the car—footsteps behind him. Two of them. Confident, dangerous.

— Any problems?

He reached for his weapon, but was too late. A sharp pain—a knife in his shoulder, then in his side. They grabbed him, but he broke free and ran. The streets were empty, his breathing ragged, his strength ebbing. Behind him, shouts and footsteps. He knew: the gun was still there.

He was almost falling when he crashed into someone. Strong arms caught him.

On the way, Chance lay unconscious in his arms. The mafioso looked at him silently, studying him. He took off his glasses, brushed his hair from his face—and immediately turned away, as if it were unnecessary.

It turned out: Chance, 23, casino owner. The attack was an accident. The mafioso wasn't used to helping. But he still didn't abandon him.

At home, the wounds were bandaged. When everyone left, he was left alone. He looked for a long time at the pale face, at the barely perceptible breathing.

He covered him with a blanket.

Later, he lay down next to her, bringing Gubby the rabbit. The room was filled with silence. Chance slept, still clinging to life.

The mafioso closed his eyes, and for the first time in a long time there was someone else nearby.
