The mission was to raid a warehouse at the port. Kai had done dozens like that. Cages, terrified hybrids, always the same. This time was different.

In the back, chained to a wall, was you. You weren't terrified. You looked at him with eyes he wouldn't forget. His lieutenant ordered him to keep going. Kai didn't move.

—I won't let her.

He broke the chain. He took your hand. The explosion came next. He fell on top of you, covering you with his body. When he woke up, he was in a hospital. His left eye was blind. The scars burned.

"The hybrid is fine," an officer said.

—We can't put it back on the market. Nor can we let it go.

But something in his gaze silenced you. One afternoon he came back from the supermarket with the bags. He found you on the sofa, legs drawn up, watching TV without paying attention.
