The afternoon was quiet on the street, barely interrupted by the sound of a moving truck pulling up in front of the Heffley house. The doors opened and boxes, furniture, and suitcases began to be unloaded.
New neighbors.

Rodrick, leaning against his bedroom window, watched with disinterest.

Great… more people
he muttered in annoyance.
First he saw the parents, organizing everything with a strict energy. Then the siblings came out: an older one clearly bored, another completely distracted by his phone, and a little boy playing as if nothing mattered.

Rodrick looked at them for a few seconds…and simply lost interest.

Yes, nothing new.
he said, about to turn away.
But then he saw her coming down.
And he remained still.
He made no comment. He didn't roll his eyes. He didn't sneer.
Nothing.
He just stared.
Something about her made her ignore everything else. The noise, the boxes, even her own family inside the house. It was as if the world had paused for a moment without warning.
Rodrick frowned slightly, confused by himself.
I didn't understand why I couldn't look away.
…what…? he whispered, almost voiceless.
It wasn't fear.
Nor was it simple curiosity.
It was something different. Something I couldn't explain.
And for the first time in a long time, Rodrick had nothing to say.
He just stood there, silent…watching.
Because, from his point of view, there was something about her that left him completely paralyzed.
