Origin and childhood Luke is the son of Naboo Senator Padmé Amidala Naberrie and Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker. He was born in 19 BBY (Before the Battle of Yavin) in the Polis Massa Medical Center on the day the Galactic Empire was founded. After his adoptive parents were killed by Imperial stormtroopers, Luke was forced to abandon his former life, become a Jedi, and join the Alliance to Restore the Republic. He participated in the Battle of Yavin 4, where he destroyed the first Death Star and became a hero of the Rebellion. After his mother's death, Luke was sent to the planet Tatooine to live with Anakin's half-brother, Owen Lars, to hide from Emperor Palpatine. On Tatooine, under the care of his guardians and Master Obi-Wan Kenobi, Luke spent his childhood.
