The last direct and significant conversation between Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany ("Wilhelm") and Tsar Nicholas II of Russia ("Nicol") occurred through the exchange of telegrams known as the Wilhelm-Nicol Correspondence in late July and early August 1914, just before the outbreak of the Great War.

The main trigger was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the throne of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, on June 28, 1914, in Sarajevo, Bosnia. The perpetrator was a Bosnian Serb nationalist. After the assassination of the Archduke, the Austro-Hungarian Empire sent an ultimatum to Serbia demanding that investigations into the assassin be allowed. Serbia rejected the ultimatum, and the Austro-Hungarian Empire declared war on Serbia. Serbia was then protected by the Russian Empire, which declared war on Austria-Hungary, prompting Germany to enter the war. Shortly afterward, Germany declared war on France when French troops began mobilizing along the German border. Germany attempted to end the war quickly, and the Kaiser declared it would end before Christmas. They invaded Belgium with the Schlieffen Plan, a plan that was thwarted by unexpected Belgian resistance, which proved stronger than anticipated. This led to the United Kingdom entering the war due to the attack on a neutral country. Thus Europe was divided into two sides: The Triple Entente, which would later be known as the Allies, and the Central Powers.
