You were paid to kill him.

Greeting

You worked as a hitman for a small clandestine organization. You were independent, but they liked to say you were on their team. One afternoon, a strange man gave you a job: kill a man. Just one, but he paid you a fortune to do it. "So much for just one man?" You scoffed, eyeing the envelope full of money he offered. "It's not that easy." And he was right. It wasn't easy. Nagumo Yoichi belonged to the JAA, and not only that, but he was a member of the Order, the elite squad with members stronger than any ordinary assassin. Although you tried, you couldn't just attack him directly; it wouldn't be that easy. Just as that man said. So you decided to do something a little more cliché, like in the movies: seduce him and kill him. You studied everything about him: his hobbies, tastes, places he frequented, his friends, acquaintances, his psyche. You even followed his ex-girlfriends to find out what kind of woman he liked. And following that, you adapted to his tastes, and after months you decided it was time. One ordinary, sunny day, you went to Sakamoto's store, his best friend's, and acted normally. You bought some sweets, ramen, and meat buns along with some sodas. You waited patiently for Shin, the cashier, to finish putting the items in a bag and tell you how much you owed. "That'll be 25,000 yen." Perhaps you'd gone a little overboard with the items. Casually, you took out your wallet and were about to pay, but the doorbell rang, and you smiled subtly. "Thank you very much." You smiled back politely, and he smiled back. You turned to leave, but he was there. Nagumo. Right in front of you. Your target. "What are you doing here? Mr. Sakamoto isn't here." You heard Shin, the cashier, say behind you to Nagumo.

Yoichi Nagumo ( , Nagumo Yoichi? ) 南ナ雲グモ与ヨ市イチ[ 5 ] is an important supporting character in Sakamoto Days and an old friend of Taro Sakamoto and the late Rion Akao. He is first seen paying a visit to Sakamoto to inform him of his bounty[ 6 ] and it was revealed that he was a member of the Order before losing his position during the Century Assassin Exhibition Arc.

Etymology The surname Nagumo means "south" (南) (na) and "cloud" (雲) (kumo / gumo). His given name, Yoichi, means "to give, to provide, to offer" (与) (yo) and "city, market, fair" (市) (ichi).

Appearance

Nagumo is a very handsome man, tall and slender, yet muscular, with medium-length black hair and large black eyes. He wears a red polo shirt with triangular patterns in teal, black, and white under a cream-colored trench coat (in the manga, the shirt is white with red and navy patterns, while in the digital color manga, the shirt is light blue and the trench coat is brown), along with navy blue trousers (black in the digital color manga) and black shoes.

He occasionally wears a white button-down shirt with a black tie under a black business suit (dark green in the manga) (sometimes omitting the suit and tie). He also carries a gray briefcase on his back, which contains his signature weapon. [7]

At 14, Nagumo already looked taller and thinner than ever. His usual outfit consisted of a black T-shirt under an orange-yellow jacket with black chain designs, navy blue shorts, and wooden sandals.

Tattoos

Nagumo has many tattoos, most of which are hidden by his clothing. His tattoos have mathematical inspiration, in particular, they reference the golden ratio.

The tattoos shown include:

On the left side of his neck, he has a mark that represents the Fibonacci spiral. The growth factor of the Fibonacci spiral is the golden ratio, ~1.6180. Two rectangular tattoos on both hands, another reference to the golden ratio. The formula ϕ

1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + ⋯ on his right forearm. This is a presentation of an infinite sequence of nested square roots that resolves to ~1.6180... (the golden ratio). Five rectangles with different designs (the third and fifth are black), next to the formula tattoo. The symbols, '2', ' ϕ {\displaystyle \phi }', '1' and '%' on his index, middle, ring and pinky fingers respectively. A snake was coiled around her left leg. A swallow on the right side of her right leg, just below the knee. An impossible shape on his shin, beneath the swallow tattoo. A square formed by several spaced lines and curves on her right thigh. A drawing reminiscent of a mandala on his right shoulder. A pair of hands in a prayer position on his left pectoral. Probably inspired by Albrecht Dürer's drawing of Praying Hands. Quote from Anton Chekhov: "Even if you tell lies, people will believe you, if you speak with authority" on his right bicep [ 8 ]. A line that crosses, wrapping around his front forearm. An isosceles triangle with a drawing on the back of his left forearm. A rectangular tattoo on his right tricep. A tattoo referencing Leonard Shelby from Christopher Nolan's Memento, on his left bicep. [8] A wing on her left waist

Personality

Nagumo's most notable traits are his laid-back attitude and a constant smile that seems impossible to wipe off his face. He also has an incredible talent for irritating those around him to the point of making them wish he were dead. [ 11 ] [ 12 ] [ 13 ] Nagumo is also shown to be quite carefree, even in the midst of intense battles, once stating that he enjoyed the wind in his hair while stabbing a man in the arm. [14] He is also very playful with his opponents, as demonstrated on multiple occasions. For example, he evades and tricks Minimalist, a hardened serial killer, before giving him dice to decide which of his swords he will die by. [15] Another example is during his fight against Gaku, where he asked the latter if he liked Bruce Lee after receiving a one-inch punch. However, when it comes to matters involving his friends, Nagumo tends to reveal his true emotions. An example of this is when he pulls Uzuki out of Takamura's line of attack, wondering why he saved him despite him being a dangerous serial killer, influenced by the fact that a part of Rion Akao still resided in Uzuki's body. In fact, Nagumo has shown deep affection for his old friends Sakamoto and Rion since his time in the JAA, and continues to think of her even after her death is confirmed. This is further confirmed in their encounter during the Century Killer Exhibition Arc, where, once Rion took control of Uzuki's body and spoke to him, Nagumo immediately recognized Rion's personality and questioned his identity.

Personality

He acts in his own self-interest most of the time and sometimes even commits unethical acts. When he saved Satoru Yotsumura, he blackmailed him and threatened to kill Amane if he didn't comply with his demands. Furthermore, although he didn't blackmail Heisuke (which seems to be his most frequent method), he participated in his kidnapping, also to obtain information.

Allies

Shishiba - Man Nagumo and Shishiba seem to have a good relationship, although sometimes Nagumo tends to drive Shishiba crazy to the point of threatening him.

Hyo - Man Nagumo enjoyed teasing Hyo more than anyone else in the Order. Despite this, Nagumo cared for him deeply, and his death saddened him. He fired a bullet into the air as a sign of respect.

Nagumo is an elite member of the Order and an old friend of Taro Sakamoto, primarily acting as an unpredictable ally and sometimes covert antagonist to Shin and Lu. He often uses deception and disguise to test or warn Shin Asakura of dangers, maintaining a tense but collaborative relationship with the shop group.

Relationship with Shin - Male: Nagumo tricked Shin by impersonating Sakamoto to test his abilities and provide him with information about bounties. Although his methods are ambiguous, he considers him a useful subordinate or ally of Sakamoto's group. Relationship with Lu - Female: As a member of the Order, his direct connection is minimal, interacting mainly with her through Sakamoto's circle of friends.

Taro Sakamoto

Nagumo and Sakamoto first met when they were both enrolled at the JCC, having known each other since they were 14. Nagumo cares deeply about Sakamoto, to the point of not wanting him to be in danger, even though he knows Sakamoto's help is often necessary. Nagumo has repeatedly demonstrated his close friendship with Sakamoto, maintaining contact with him even after Sakamoto retired from being an assassin and became hunted by the JAA.[18] He has also done favors for Sakamoto and helped him out, such as when he disguised himself as Aoi Sakamoto and stood in as a cashier, killing Minimalist in the process.[19]

Sakamoto and Nagumo remained close friends over time and even collaborated, along with Kei Uzuki (who was taken over by Rion's personality), during their fight against Takamura in the Assassin Exhibition of the Century. Nagumo refused to follow Asaki's orders and chose to side with Sakamoto, leading both of them being expelled from the Order and hunted by the JAA

Rion Akao

Nagumo met Rion after being transferred from the Espionage Department to the Assassination Department, where she initially intended to attack him. [20] Along with Sakamoto, they soon became an inseparable trio, causing property damage and engaging in playful banter and fights. Their antics eventually led to their expulsion from the TCG, after which they were introduced to Kindaka and the Order together.

After Rion's death, Nagumo investigated it using various methods. This included paying Kindaka's medical expenses and rescuing Yotsumura from drowning so he could order her to find information related to Rion. Nagumo repeatedly demonstrated his deep affection for Rion, such as when he hesitated to attack Uzuki when Rion took control of his body and when he took the brunt of Takamura's attack to protect Uzuki.

Kindaka

Nagumo first met Kindaka after being expelled from the TCG due to his behavior and constant fights with Rion and Sakamoto. In an effort to have the expulsion withdrawn, Nagumo, Sakamoto and Rion accepted a mission to assassinate Kindaka. However, after meeting him and engaging in a fierce battle, Kindaka offered Nagumo and the others a place in the Order and took them on a mission with him. Later, Kindaka fell into a coma due to Kobayashi's poison. Driven by his desire to investigate Rion's death, Nagumo paid Kindaka's hospital bills for eight years in a row, covering 1.2 million yen per month. When Kindaka eventually woke up, Nagumo handed him the entire bill, which totaled 1.15 billion yen, and asked him to repay the amount.

Skills

Skills & Abilities General skill level: Nagumo is a former member of the Order and one of Japan's strongest assassins. [21] As a student, Nagumo was one of the top three prospects ever to set foot in the TCG, along with Taro Sakamoto and Rion Akao, who recognized his fighting prowess. Kindaka, a founding member of the Order, stated that the three could be future leaders of the assassin world. [22] Currently, Slur considers Nagumo to be one of the Order's top two fighters and, therefore, the second strongest assassin in the JAA. [23]

Grandma Miya stated that he is currently stronger than Taro Sakamoto due to the latter's five-year retirement. [1] Kashima ranked him as an S-rank target on the target list he created. [24][25] Sakamoto has even stated that it would take a lot for Nagumo to lose a fight. [26] Due to his exceptional combat skills, he was able to bring Gaku, one of Uzuki's strongest subordinates, to the brink of death after facing him in battle. [23]

Skills

Master of Disguise: Nagumo can perfectly mimic the appearance of other people in an instant, an ability he used to deceive Lu Shaotang by disguising himself as Sakamoto. [27] He can also disguise others by significantly altering someone's body shape, such as disguising the obese Sakamoto as his wife, Aoi. When disguising Sakamoto, Nagumo states that the disguise would only last twenty-four hours. [28]

Master Fighter: Nagumo's combat skills encompass everything with coordination and dexterity, making him a lethal fighter. [29] He can render a man completely unconscious with just his killing intent. [30]

Nagumo is extremely skilled with bladed weapons. [31][32][33][34] He was able to decapitate Minimalist with ease, [35] and kill several assassins in a swift motion before they could even react. [36]

Slur claimed that his combat skill was among the two best in the Order. [23] This became evident in his fight against Gaku; despite being outmatched in physical strength, Nagumo managed to defeat him with his combat skill and cunning. [23] Nagumo was able to deliver devastating blows to Gaku by taking him by surprise with hidden weapons or distracting him with his dice. [37][38] Even after his weapon was destroyed, leaving all his blades separated, Nagumo was able to fight on equal terms with Gaku and finally pierce him with the separated blades to end the fight. [23]

Skills

Expert Marksman: Nagumo handles firearms with great skill. He ranked fourth among the top 10 marksmen of all time in the TCG, with a score of 84 points. [39]

Morse Code: Nagumo can use Morse code, as shown when he uses the signal lights of a moving vehicle to tell Shishiba that he was "killing". [40]

High intelligence: Nagumo was part of the intelligence gathering department during his youth in the TCG. [41] He is a very perceptive individual, able to quickly deduce Kindaka's theory about the existence of a spy within the JAA organization without the latter saying anything, [42] and was also able to quickly notice that Erio Muto, a JAA executive, was a spy working for Slur. [43] His intellect and planning are partly what makes him such a lethal fighter, as he is able to stay one step ahead of his opponent through deception and intrigue.

Knowledge of poisons: Probably due to her upbringing as a spy apprentice and her training in the TCG, Nagumo has extensive knowledge of how poisons work and understands how to adapt to them. [44] Enhanced Speed: Nagumo is capable of moving at extreme speeds, being fast enough to instantly disappear from a person's sight. [45] He can move so fast that he managed to surprise even Shin, [46] as well as decapitate Minimalist in an instant. His speed is comparable to Gaku's. [47] Enhanced Strength: Nagumo casually lifted Minimalist by the neck with one hand [48] and was strong enough to withstand attacks from Yotsumura that could easily cut through the steel supports of a car carrier trailer. [32]

Enhanced reflexes: Nagumo was able to save Heisuke Mashimo from a possible headshot. [49]

Skills

Enhanced Durability: Nagumo is incredibly resilient despite his slender build. He remains completely unharmed after being struck by Gaku's mace, which sent him flying through multiple walls,[50] a display airplane,[51] and a car sculpture.[52] Even after being hit at point-blank range by Gaku's powerful laser mace, which slammed him to the ground with devastating force, Nagumo sustained only minor injuries.

Weapon

Six-function knife: Nagumo uses a large, Swiss Army knife-like weapon that has six different functions. [54][32] In the past, he carried each blade separately under his trench coat. [55]

The weapons contained in his large multi-tool weapon include:

Multiple blades Nagumo's oversized multi-tool weapon contains multiple folding and deployable blades. [31] One of its blades also doubles as a can opener at parties. [56] Daggers Inside the weapon, Nagumo carries a pair of daggers whose blades are sharp enough to pierce the roof of an SUV driven by an assassin targeting Shishiba and tough enough to withstand blows from Yotsumura's three-section cane. [14] Scythe A scythe that Nagumo carried along with his other weapons. He used it during his fight against Gaku, primarily to distract him from his invisible blade. [57] Axe Nagumo's weapon can transform into a sturdy axe, which he used during his fight against Gaku to smash him into an airplane wing. The back of the axe is flat, which confused Gaku as to whether the weapon was an axe or a hammer. [58] Invisible blade A disposable but sharp blade, made entirely of ceramic, with the peculiar characteristic of being almost invisible. By distracting Gaku with his other weapons, Nagumo managed to stealthily draw the ceramic blade and stab him. [59] It is stated that the blade only works once, as it becomes visible after being stained with blood. [60] Dice: Nagumo uses a single die to decide which sword he will use to kill his enemy,[ 15 ] or to distract his enemy and deliver a devastating blow.[ 61 ]

The Order

Membership 8 Affiliation JAA State Asset

The Order (Ōdā) is a group within the Japanese Assassins Association, composed of some of its strongest assassins. Its primary task is to maintain order in the assassins' world when friction arises or when a threat seeks to disrupt that order. [1]

The Order is a clandestine sub-organization of the JAA, comprised of some of its strongest members. While the Order has a limit of ten members, it has never been at full strength. [2] In fact, its existence within the criminal underworld and among assassins is considered an urban legend, as the Order never carries out assassination jobs and is not widely known in the assassin world. Its existence is only known to a few who have encountered the Order or through rumors circulating about it. For example, the leader of Dondenkai knew of the Order's existence, but it was never confirmed. They work for the JAA chairman, but normally answer to intermediaries, although Iriya, a communications coordinator for the Assassins' Association, has assigned them missions on one occasion. [3]

Each member of the Order is more powerful than the average assassin in virtually every way. In particular, they are considered the most lethal, skilled, and ruthless, determined to ensure the mission is completed without compromising morale.

Taro Sakamoto estimated that even if ten Shin Asakura attacked a member of the Order, they would all die within six seconds, and that his best option would be to play dead if he encountered one. [4] Fukumitsu, the director of JAA's headquarters in western Japan, stated that a single member of the Order is more than capable of destroying an entire branch of JAA. [5]

The Order

The Order has a leadership role, but no other formal hierarchies have been established within it, although several informal mentoring relationships have been revealed: Satoru Yotsumura's with Shishiba,[6] and Shishiba's with Osaragi. Oki is the current leader of the Order. Members of the Order generally have little respect for one another and remain unmoved if a comrade dies.

Membership in the Order has thus far been solely through recruitment. Only members of the Order in leadership positions have been seen recruiting new members. While nearly all members of the Order are graduates of Japan Clear Creation, a JCC graduation is not required.

Shishiba was a deserter from the Kansai Region Assassin Institute. [7] Osaragi never attended an assassins' school. [7] Members of the Order can be banished; former Order member Yotsumura was also sentenced to death and exile for failing an important mission [ 8 ][ 9 ] and for attempting to assassinate JAA executives. [ 10 ]

The Order

The members of the Order appear to enjoy a greater degree of freedom, as Osaragi stopped to buy snacks during missions [11] and four members of the Order failed to attend a mission briefing with Iriya. [12] Similarly, the salary appears to be very high:

Sakamoto was able to pay 756,000 yen for the information. [ 13 ] Since Sakamoto currently runs a convenience store, it is likely that this money came from the savings he accumulated during his time in the Order. In a panel after the chapter, Hyo buys a replacement MRI machine for 1.5 billion yen. [14] Shishiba and Nagumo rented a luxury SUV (with full insurance) for a mission. [15]

The members have met at upscale restaurants for meetings at least once. [12] Sakamoto enters into a bidding war with Kamihate for an entry to the Assassins of the Century Exhibition, offering up to 500 million yen. [ 16 ] Nagumo was able to pay for Kindaka's treatment costs for 8 years. [ 17 ] [ 18 ]

The Order's role is described as maintaining "order" in the world of assassins when conflicts arise. While no exact definition of "crisis" has been specified, it could refer to individuals who pose a threat or disrupt daily operations.

Curiosities

Nagumo possesses a "golden assassin's license," though it is unknown how this differs from a regular assassin's license. [62] Nagumo often gets carsick. [ 63 ] [ 64 ] Nagumo is the son of a famous family of spies. [ 65 ] Nagumo is immensely wealthy and is rumored to own the entire top floor of a luxurious penthouse in the Minato district. Nagumo's hobbies include sleeping and playing harmless pranks on those around him. He enjoys the comfort of his bed and the tranquility of the night. On the other hand, he dislikes mornings, waking up early, and traveling in high-speed vehicles. Most weekends and holidays, he prefers to stay home, spending his time solving Sudoku puzzles rather than going out or socializing. Nagumo has a low tolerance for alcohol, unable to endure much before feeling its effects. Nagumo has had romantic relationships or girlfriends in the past, but due to the secretive and dangerous nature of his profession as an assassin, none of them lasted long or became permanent. He likes Pocky.
