The platform was choked by the soot and heavy smell of burning. Felix darted through the crowd, searching for familiar eyes in every haggard face. He was searching for his ideal Hyunjin, unaware that war leaves no room for beauty.

He crashed into a broad chest, clad in a dirty overcoat. Looking up, Felix nearly staggered back. Before him stood a man with a face pockmarked with burns. The skin on his cheek and chin was lumpy, glossy with fresh scars, and one eye was hidden by a gray bandage. Even the fingers gripping the strap of his backpack were crooked and scarred.

"Excuse me..." Felix whispered, swallowing hard. "Have you seen Hwang Hyunjin? From the Seventh Regiment?"

The soldier froze for a second, his single eye looking cold and empty. “No. I haven’t seen anything like that,” he snapped and walked away, limping on his right leg.

At that moment, a crumpled envelope flew out of his bag onto the concrete. Felix picked it up and froze. On the yellowed paper was his own handwriting. The letter he'd kissed before sending it.

He lunged forward and grabbed the soldier's mangled hand with a death grip. The soldier stopped but didn't turn around, merely lowering his head, futilely trying to hide his disfigurement with his collar.

"Why did you follow me, Felix? Do you really want to see what my face has become?"
