80s RPG

1. Moral Panic and the Epidemic of Fear (HIV/AIDS)
   As we mentioned before, the discovery of the virus in the middle of the decade brought out the worst in humanity.
   The Stigma: Prejudice against the LGBTQIA+ community was aggressive. The virus was wrongly called "gay cancer." In their game, this would translate to isolation, hospitals refusing treatment, and a constant paranoia about "who is the carrier."
   The Death of Icons: Watching people like Cazuza publicly wither away on Brazilian TV generated a mixture of pity and dread, but it also served to rub in society's face that nobody was invincible.
2. Machismo and the "Role" of Women
   Despite the "Girl Power" aesthetic of icons like Madonna, daily life was brutal.
   Objectification: The "Pornochanchada" culture in Brazil and American action films treated women either as trophies or as victims.
   Normalized Harassment: Jokes and behaviors that would be considered crimes today were seen as "barroom banter." In RPGs, a female character would have to fight twice as hard to be taken seriously in professional settings or on the streets.
3. Structural Racism and Police Violence
   In the 1980s, segregation wasn't official, but it was felt through the force of the truncheon.
   Profiling: If your character is black and driving a Ferrari Testarossa or an Opala Diplomata, the RPG police will stop you at every corner. "Suspicious behavior" was the excuse for violence.
   Apartheid: On the global stage, the Apartheid regime in South Africa was at the height of its brutality, generating worldwide protests and boycotts by bands and athletes.
4. Mental Health: The "Cool" and the "Crazy"
   The 80s would be a nightmare of misunderstandings.
   Invisibility: Depression and anxiety were not treated as illnesses, but as "lack of willpower" or "fussiness."
   Barbaric Treatments: Asylums were still human warehouses. There was none of the dialogue we have today. Either you were "normal" and productive, or you were discarded by the system.

1. The Golden Age of Arcades
   It was where the graphics were "cutting-edge" and you spent your tokens (and your patience).
   Pat-Man (1980) and Mrs. Pac-Man: The cultural phenomenon. Simple, addictive, and ubiquitous in any bar or bus station.
   Donkey Kong (1981): Where "Jumpman" (who would later become Mario) appeared trying to save Pauline from a giant gorilla.
   Double Dragon (1987): The father of the Beat 'em Up. If your RPG character wants to settle things with their fists in the dirty streets, this is the background sound.
   Street Fighter (1987): The first one. It wasn't yet the phenomenon that was the second one, but it already showed Ryu and Ken throwing their first Hadoukens.
2. Home Consoles (The Couch Revolution)
   Atari 2600: The king of the early decade. Games like River Raid, Enduro, and Pitfall! were what everyone played. Blocky graphics, but they demanded imagination.
   NES (Nintendo Entertainment System): Released in the mid-decade, it changed everything with Super Mario Bros. and the first The Legend of Zelda. It was here that games gained "endings" and more complex stories.
   Master System (Sega): In Brazil, it was a giant thanks to Tectoy. Games like Alex Kidd and Castle of Illusion were the visual elite of the time.

1. The Reign of Terror (Slasher and Supernatural)
   This was the decade that created the icons. If your RPG has a villain, it's probably inspired by these:
   The Shining (1980): Released at the very beginning of the decade, it elevated horror to an absurd psychological level. Those empty corridors of the Overlook Hotel are the very image of 80s loneliness.
   Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street: Jason and Freddy Krueger turned horror into a teenage craze. It was the cinema of the "body"—lots of blood, scares, and chases in forests or suburbs.
   The Thing (1982): If you want to see what "deep imperfection" and "chaos" really are, this John Carpenter film is a must-see. The mutation effects are disgusting and realistic.
   Hellraiser (1987): Introduced Pinhead and a vision of pain and pleasure that completely breaks with traditional taboos, something that resonates well with his vision of "feeling the chaos".
2. The Friends' Adventure and Sci-Fi
   E.T. and The Goonies: Films that showed children/teenagers on bicycles solving mysteries that adults couldn't see. It's the aesthetic of suburban streets, denim jackets, and walkie-talkies.
   Blade Runner (1982): The father of Cyberpunk. If your RPG has a more philosophical and existentialist bent ("What makes us human?"), this is the atmosphere. Eternal rain, neon, and melancholy.
   Aliens (1986): The pinnacle of suspense mixed with military action. It's claustrophobic and brutal.
3. The Explosion of Superheroes (The Beginning)
   Superman II (1980): The classic hero was still shining brightly at the beginning of the decade.
   Batman (1989): Tim Burton's film closed out the decade by bringing the Joker (Jack Nicholson) to center stage. It was here that the hero became "dark and serious" again.
4. National Cinema (Porn Comedies and Drama)
   In Brazil, cinema was experiencing a strange mix. On one hand, erotic comedies packed the theaters; on the other, heavy social films.

1. The Cold War: The Chessboard
   The world was bipolar. On one side, the USA (Capitalism, Reagan, excesses); on the other, the USSR (Socialism, Gorbachev, austerity).
   The Mushroom Fear: Nuclear paranoia was real. People lived knowing that if one of the leaders pressed a button, everything would end in minutes. This generated nihilism in the youth: "Let's enjoy today, because tomorrow the world could be ashes."
   Spy: It was the golden age of spies. Berlin, with its Wall, was the heart of this conflict. Crossing from the Western side to the Eastern side was like changing planets.
2. Brazil: Emerging from the Shadows
   In RPGs, if you focus on Brazil, the atmosphere is one of transition and uncertainty.
   End of the Dictatorship (1985): The country was leaving behind the "years of lead." There was euphoria with democracy, but the economy was in shambles (rampant inflation).
   Relationship with Neighbors: The entire Latin America was trying to rid itself of military regimes. It was a continent trying to rediscover itself while dealing with colossal external debts.
3. Conflicts that "Bleed" Around the World
   The superpowers did not fight each other directly, but used other countries as an arena:
   Iran-Iraq War: A brutal and visceral conflict that lasted almost an entire decade.
   Afghanistan: The USSR mired in a war that would be their "Vietnam".
   Falklands War (1982): Argentina facing the Iron Lady (Margaret Thatcher) of the United Kingdom. It was a reality check for South America.
4. The Emergence of the "Asian Tigers"
   While the West was fighting, Japan and other Asian countries began to dominate the world through technology. Japanese cars and electronics (like Sony's Walkman) began to flood the markets, generating economic tension with the Americans.

1. The Game of Seduction (No Wi-Fi)
   Forget apps. Everything was based on physical presence and courage.
   The "Look": Flirting took place in nightclubs, skating rinks, or while "footing" (taking a drive or walking along the city's main avenue).
   The Landline Phone: It was the battleground. Calling someone's house and hoping their father wouldn't answer was the ultimate test of any relationship. Conversations lasted for hours, with the phone cord wrapped around your finger.
   Letters and Cassette Tapes: Creating a "Mixtape" with songs by Raul Seixas or New Wave bands was the ultimate declaration of love. It was something tangible, something you delivered in person.
2. Freedom and Contrast
   At the beginning of the decade, there was still an aura of "free love." The parties were intense, the look was androgynous (men in makeup and women in suits), and experimentation was the rule, especially in large urban centers.
   The "Anomaly" of the 80s: It was an era where the "aggressive" and sexualized look (leather, studs, lace) often hid a deep search for connection in a world that seemed about to explode because of the Cold War.
3. The "Wall" of 1985: The Emergence of AIDS
   Here, the tone of your RPG can become dark and visceral. In the middle of the decade, the emergence of HIV changed everything drastically.
   The End of Innocence: Sex, once seen as a celebration, became associated with fear and death. Society became more conservative and paranoid.
   The Stigma: Unfortunately, there was a lot of persecution and prejudice. Heavy (and often frightening) awareness campaigns were on TV. In the game, this can generate tense dialogues about trust and risk.
4. Sexuality and Taboos
   Despite the fear, it was a decade of affirmation.
   Coming Out of the Closet: Despite strong prejudice, figures like Freddie Mercury and Cazuza (here in Brazil) were icons who lived their truths, inspiring many people not to hide, preferring the "pain of existing" to the shadow of invisibility.
   Drive-ins and motels.

1. Street Icons (Cars)
   DeLorean DMC-12: The ultimate car of the decade. With its gull-wing doors and brushed steel body, it looks like a spaceship. In the RPG, it would be the car of someone eccentric or tech-savvy.
   Ferrari Testarossa: The face of "Miami Vice". With those gigantic side air intakes (the famous "gills"), it's the ultimate symbol of wealth and power in 1984.
   Lamborghini Countach: The poster every teenager had on their wall. It's aggressive, noisy, and almost impossible to drive, which suits a kind of "modern samurai" character who likes challenges.
   Volkswagen Gol GT/GTS (Brazil): If the game has a Brazilian feel, the "square" Gol is king. It's the car of the young person who likes to speed around town, practical and robust.
   Diplomata Chevrolet Opala: The pinnacle of national luxury. A powerful 6-cylinder engine that commands respect. In an RPG, it would be the car of a white-collar villain or a veteran investigator.
2. Two Wheels and Adrenaline (Motorcycles)
   The 1980s were the decade in which motorcycles ceased to be just transportation and became "super machines":
   Kawasaki Ninja GPZ900R: The motorcycle from the movie Top Gun (1986). It was the first to be called "Ninja". It's fast, has a fairing, and that aggressive green and black look.
   Honda CBX 750F (The famous "Seven Rooster"): A legend in Brazil. The roar of its four-cylinder engine is unmistakable. In RPGs, it's the ideal motorcycle for nighttime chases under neon lights.
   Yamaha RD 350 ("Black Widow"): Light, unstable, and absurdly fast. It earned this nickname because many people couldn't tame its power. Perfect for a character who lives on the edge.
   Suzuki Katana: With a radical and futuristic Japanese design for its time, it looks like it came straight out of an 80s science fiction anime.
3. Setting Details for the RPG:
   To provide an immersive experience with HiWaifu, describe the technical details that were considered "luxuries" at the time:
   Auto-reverse cassette player: The pinnacle of technology, eliminating the need to manually flip the cassette tape.

The Gods of Pop (The Untouchables)
If your character enters a shopping mall or a nightclub, this is what they will hear:
Michael Jackson: The absolute king. Thriller (1982) changed everything. He is the biggest star on the planet; the look of the red leather jackets with zippers comes from him.
Madonna: The "Material Girl." She dictates the fashion of rubber bracelets, crucifixes, and the rebellious-chic style. She is the voice of those who want to have fun and challenge the system.
Prince: The multi-instrumentalist genius. He blends funk, rock, and pop with an androgynous, purple look that both confuses and captivates everyone.
2. International Rock (Heavy Music and Synthesizers)
Queen: At her peak after Live Aid (1985). Anthems like "Radio Ga Ga" and "I Want to Break Free" are mandatory on any radio station.
Guns N' Roses: If your RPG focuses on the grittier, more dangerous side of the streets, the sound is Appetite for Destruction. They brought danger back to rock at the end of the decade.
Bon Jovi & Van Halen: The so-called "Hair Metal." Huge hair, shredding guitar solos, and tons of energy. "Livin' on a Prayer" is the anthem of the working class of that era.
The Police & U2: They bring a more intellectual and political edge to rock, mixing it with the clean sound of New Wave.
3. "BRock" (The sound that speaks our language)
Since the game takes place in the 80s, Brazil is experiencing redemocratization, and the music reflects this chaos and hope:
Legião Urbana: Renato Russo is the poet of the masses. Songs like "Será" and "Eduardo e Mônica" are played everywhere.
Titãs: They started out fun and turned visceral with the album Cabeça Dinossauro. It's the perfect sound for scenes of rebellion or urban tension.
RPM: If your RPG is set in 1986, RPM is bigger than the Beatles in Brazil. Paulo Ricardo with his pirate radio is omnipresent.
Cazuza & Barão Vermelho: The personification of Brazilian bohemianism and rebellion.
4. New Wave and Dark (For the Neon-lit alleys)

The World: Between Neon and Concrete
Society is experiencing the peak of consumer culture. It's an era of excess and contradictions. People are obsessed with status, but live under the shadow of a possible nuclear war (the famous fear of the red button).
The Behavior: There's a sense of urgency. Interactions are face-to-face or via noisy payphones; there's no barrier of cell phones, so contact is more raw and direct. "Common sense" is dictated by what's on TV and FM radio. It's a world of VHS tapes, smoky arcades, and shopping malls that look like temples.
The Visual (The Social Armor): Colors and Materials: Lots of acid-wash denim, black leather, shiny spandex, and neon shades (hot pink, lime green) contrasting with urban gray.
Silhouette: Everything is exaggerated. Men wear jackets with wide shoulder pads or baggy flannel shirts; women embrace volume, both in clothing and plastic accessories.
Hair and Makeup: The "style" is defined by hairspray. Voluminous, tousled hair or mullets. The makeup is heavy, with colorful eyeshadows and pronounced blushes, almost like war paint to face the concrete jungle.
