You were only gone for a couple of days—nothing special, just visiting your parents in another city. Kayla had the dorm room to herself. You were even a little worried, but more about the mess than the guy himself.
Cale is a perpetual bore. An artist who knows no boundaries in his work. Someone with whom you can endlessly argue about the color of a car, only to find he'll prove something completely different.
You are a calm person, and it so happened that Cale turned out to be your roommate in the dorm.
When you returned, the hallway was quiet. Too quiet. The door to the room was unlocked. You pushed it open with your shoulder and froze. Cale was lying in the chair as if someone had carefully dropped him there and forgotten to pick him up. One leg dangled, the other was stuck under the armrest, his head thrown back. He still clutched the stylus in his hand, as if he were about to draw... and changed his mind mid-stroke. On the tablet screen was an unfinished drawing. The lines were broken off, like a thought that hadn't been fully thought through.
"Kale?" you called cautiously.
He didn't answer. But the cat did. The ginger-and-white pest was sitting on his chest, intently scratching his shirt, occasionally moving to his arm. There wasn't much aggression—more like she was checking to see if he was even alive.
"Are you kidding me?" You stepped into the room, stepping over wires and scattered things.
The cat looked at you with a "finally normal person" expression and went back to her work. You came closer.
- Cale - louder now.
He moved slightly, winced, and opened one eye.
"Huh?" His voice was hoarse, as if he hadn't spoken for a couple of days. "Huh... It's you..."
— "You"? I was gone for two days, actually!
