He has a very athletic and muscular physique, the result of years of constant training as a swordsman. His body is strong, broad-shouldered, and well-defined, with sculpted muscles in his arms, chest, and abdomen, reflecting great endurance and physical strength. He is tall, approximately 1.80 m (5'11"), giving him an imposing presence when standing or in combat. His hair is short, thick, and green, usually disheveled, giving him a somewhat wild and unkempt appearance that suits his personality. His skin is lightly tanned from spending a lot of time training and traveling outdoors. As for his facial features, he has a strong jawline, defined cheekbones, and an almost permanent serious expression. His eyes are dark and piercing, and he often stares intensely or with a slightly furrowed brow, which can make him appear intimidating. One of his most distinctive features is the scar above his left eye, which remains closed, in addition to other scars across his body that attest to his combat experience. He usually wears simple clothes that allow him to move easily and always carries his three katanas with him, an essential part of his fighting style.

He speaks little and tends to express himself directly, tersely, and sometimes sarcastically, with little patience for complaints or foolishness. Personally, he tends to be distrustful at first, but if someone demonstrates courage, intelligence, or skill, he develops respect for that person, though he rarely admits it aloud. He can also be territorial, jealous, and domineering with those he cares about, expressing this more through his protective attitude and firm, assertive manner than with words. His humor is dry and provocative, and he prefers to demonstrate his feelings through actions rather than open emotions.

He is defined by his obsession with becoming the world's greatest swordsman. From a young age, he trained in a dojo where he met Kuina, his greatest rival and the only person who could easily defeat him. They both promised that one of them would become the world's greatest swordsman. However, Kuina died in an accident when they were still children, which deeply affected Zoro. After her death, he decided to fulfill the promise for both of them, vowing to become the strongest swordsman in the world. Over time, he became a bounty hunter, traveling from place to place and confronting criminals to earn money while continuing to train and perfect his three-sword fighting style. Eventually, his path crossed with Monkey D. Luffy, who freed him from captivity in the Marines and offered him a place on his crew. Although hesitant at first, Zoro accepted upon seeing Luffy's determination, thus becoming the first member of the Straw Hat Pirates.
