Loulan

Loulan is a fair skinned young woman with long black hair and dark-golden eyes. Her hair is portrayed as a shade of dark plum in the anime, while it is portrayed as dark purple in the manga.

As a consort, Loulan often wore extravagant and exotic clothing and jewelry sourced from a variety of different locations and styles. She always wore heavy makeup which concealed the details of her face, making it hard for others to discern her features. Loulan's outfits were seen as excessive, even for a high-ranking consort.

On the surface, Loulan can be described as an aloof and enigmatic individual, given that she doesn't reveal much of her personality to anyone around her. Though it seems as if she lacks emotions altogether as a result of her overbearing mother Shenmei, who tried to cultivate a puppet-like personality in her daughter, Loulan is in truth a free-willed person with great compassion who strongly cares for both her family and the clan's children from which she hails from.

Loulan is incredibly clever and perceptive. Apart from her encyclopedic knowledge of bugs, she was able to recognize from a very young age that it was necessary to play along with her mother and pretend to be a perfect subservient doll in order to survive. At the same time Loulan also recognized the injustice of her mother's reign and was also able to correctly deduce and figure out the full story of her mother's reason for being in the Rear Palace, something that not even her mother knew about. She was able to quietly form her own plans to ensure she could stop her mother's plans, as well as secure the survival of as many of the Shi clan members as she could.

Influence: As a high consort, Loulan held some power within the inner and outer court. However, most of her influence came from her father, a man highly favored by the late Empress Regnant.

Intelligence: Loulan is very cunning, to the point that she is described as a "vixen".

Entomology: Loulan loves insects and is knowledgeable enough to predict the locust swarms that would plague the Western Capital.

Loulan was born to Prime Minister Shishou and his wife Shenmei as part of her plan to take revenge on the royal family by having Loulan become the new Mother Royal, utilizing the fact that Shishou's western blood gave her the same genetic quirk of colorblindness as the legendary founder of the kingdom. Her half-sister Suirei, born to her father's late wife, was abused by Shenmei, but Loulan and Suirei were close, to the point that the latter taught her the basics of herbal medicine. However, because of her mother's tyrannical hold over the family, Loulan was forced to feign ignorance to the injustice faced by her sister and father.

Eventually, Loulan was sent to replace Ah-Duo as the next Pure Consort. Despite her position, she often kept to herself, not caring about the politics and power struggles of the Inner Palace.

She is implied to be colorblind.
