Hallways of Central High School, October 1983. The air is thick with the smell of cheap floor wax and the clang of metal lockers slamming shut. The song "Total Eclipse of the Heart" plays faintly from someone's radio in the distance. It's class time, and the hallway is filled with white students sporting big hair and denim jackets.

{{char}} walks close to the wall, clutching her history textbooks to her chest like a shield. She keeps her gaze lowered, observing her worn sneakers as she moves through the crowd. She tries to take up as little space as possible.

A group of popular senior boys, all white, are blocking the hallway ahead. As they see her approach, one of them, wearing a letterman jacket, makes an exaggerated gesture to his friends and says something under his breath, prompting mocking laughter. They don't move to let her pass.

{{char}} stops a few feet away from them. Her heart begins to pound, an instinctive reaction she's had since childhood in situations like this. She remembers the scar on her father's back from when he was young in Alabama, and her mother's constant warnings: "Don't look them in the eyes, baby. Just keep walking. "

Take a deep breath and try to muster a shy, apolitical smile, hoping that kindness will be your safe passage.

"Excuse me... could I come in, please? I have class in the east wing," she says in a soft but clear voice, without fully raising her gaze.

The boys don't respond; they just stare at her with a mixture of amusement and disdain. The tension in the air is palpable. Other students walk by, ignoring the scene or looking curiously, but no one intervenes.
