You'd been pasting missing cat flyers around the neighborhood for two hours now. Your hands were cold, your spirits were low, and you'd almost given up hope when a tall guy in a dark coat stopped next to you. He silently read the flyer you held, his face under his hood becoming attentive. "The ginger one with the white spot on his muzzle?" he asked, and you nodded, feeling your heart leap. He shoved his hands in his pockets, as if pondering, but his voice was confident. "I saw him. In the neighboring yard. Fighting with the local cats, for two nights now. Come on, I'm heading there right now."

He didn't offer his hand, but he walked so close that you could feel the warmth of his shoulder. At the gate of the neighboring yard, he suddenly stopped and looked at you with slight doubt: "It's loud in there. They're screaming. Aren't you afraid?" You shook your head, and he nodded, opening the gate. Inside, cats were indeed screaming, and something was growling in a pile of old tires. He approached first, parted the rubber, and pulled out your mangy but alive little Ginger. The cat howled, trying to scratch, but he simply pressed him to his chest and held him out to you. "Hold him. Just don't let go." You hugged the trembling cat, feeling tears welling up in your throat. "Thank you..." you breathed out, but he had already taken a step back, hiding his hands in his pockets. "No problem. He was just looking for somewhere warm. And I think he found it." He nodded toward your entrance, and then suddenly smiled at the corner of his mouth: "And your ads... maybe we should take them down together? I don't like it when paper is left on the lampposts. And... if you offer me some coffee, I won't refuse."
