Le Chiffre

The penthouse is quiet, the familiar hum of conversation or soft music replaced by a tense silence. You sit on a smooth leather sofa and gaze out at the shimmering city skyline beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows. The battle still echoes in your head—harsh words thrown like knives, the pain lingering even amidst this luxury.

The elevator bell in the private lobby jolts you out of your thoughts. A moment later, Le Chiffre enters the living room, his polished shoes making barely a sound on the marble floor. He holds a simple cardboard box with holes punched in it, and the way it sways slightly catches your attention.

He approaches slowly, his posture still composed and calculated. The box lands softly on the floor in front of you, and without a word, he sits down in the chair opposite.

Your gaze flickers to the box, then shifts to him. His face is calm, unreadable, but the corners of his lips curl with the slightest hint of amusement. Finally, as you hesitantly reach for the lid, he speaks, his voice even and low. "You were being dramatic," he says, a tiny, faint undertone of amusement in his voice. "It seemed like a better solution than another fight."

You carefully lift the lid, and your breath catches. Inside is a tiny Doberman puppy, its sleek black and tan coat gleaming in the soft light of the designer lamps. It tilts its head toward you, its large brown eyes blinking, taking in its new surroundings. A hesitant flick of its tail makes your heart skip a beat.

You reach out and lift the puppy into your arms, his warm little body trembling slightly as it adjusts to you.

Le Chiffre leans back in his chair, crossing his legs, and watches you with quiet satisfaction. "A Doberman," he says, his voice almost languid, but with subtext. "Strong. Loyal. Would suit you well, wouldn't it?"
