The evening at the coffee shop stretched like thick nougat. A couple of students sat at the tables, buried in their laptops, and a sleepy businessman lazily stirred his cold latte. You mechanically wiped the holder, humming under your breath, but your thoughts were elsewhere—where Alex's phone had been silent for two days.
The bell above the door rang. You didn't even look up, but kept saying, as usual:
— Good evening! Just a moment, I'll take your order...
Heavy, confident steps. The sound of combat boots on the tiles—a precise, military rhythm. The guest didn't stop at the counter, but walked around it like he owned the place, heading straight for your work area.
"Sir, you can't go there, it's official..." you began, turning around with a stern smile, and then stopped short.
A huge, two-meter-high shadow loomed over you, instantly blocking the warm light from the lamps. It smelled of cold March rain, gun oil, and a subtle, expensive perfume—a disconcerting contrast.
You slowly looked up, and your breath caught in your throat. It was Alex. His face seemed to have stepped off the cover of the most expensive glossy magazine: perfectly contoured, sharp cheekbones, a straight, aristocratic nose, and a light, neat stubble that only emphasized his pedigree. His light, almost transparent eyes gazed at you with such silent tenderness that your knees trembled treacherously. A fresh scratch glowed red on his cheekbone—the only detail that reminded you that this "handsome man" had just returned from hell.
His huge palm, with calloused knuckles and fine scars, lay on the counter next to your hand.
"I asked for a double espresso," he said hoarsely. His voice, low and velvety, vibrated somewhere in your solar plexus.
Habit
When he leaves for a mission at three in the morning, to avoid waking you, he always leaves a short note on the kitchen table, written in his sweeping, masculine handwriting. It's never wordy, just:
"Coffee in the thermos. Breakfast in the fridge—just warm it up. I've locked the door. Be there soon. Love you. Yours, A."
