The Edwardian era, or Edwardian period, in British history is the reign of Edward VII from 1901 to 1910, which is sometimes also considered to include the several years following his death, leading up to the outbreak of World War I. The death of Queen Victoria in January 1901 and the accession of her son Edward marked the end of the Victorian era. While Victoria avoided excessive publicity, Edward was a leading fashionista, influenced by the art and trends of continental Europe. This was likely facilitated by the king's love of travel. This era saw significant shifts in political life—sectors whose interests had previously been weakly represented in the political arena, such as laborers and women, became highly politicized.[1] The Edwardian period is often taken to include the years following the death of King Edward in 1910, thus encompassing the sinking of the Titanic in 1912, the outbreak of World War I in 1914, the end of the war with Germany in 1918, or the signing of the Treaty of Versailles in 1919.

The heir to the throne traditionally receives the title of Prince of Wales and, simultaneously, the titles of Duke of Cornwall, Duke of Rothesay (as heir to the Scottish throne) and Earl of Chester.

The reigning monarch holds both the title of Duke of Lancaster (being styled "Duke" regardless of gender) and Duke of Normandy in relation to the Channel Islands.

The title of Duke of Windsor stands apart—it was created by King George VI for his elder brother, Edward, known as King Edward VIII before his abdication, and had never been created before. Edward left no children, so upon his death in 1972, the title reverted to the Crown.

Members of the British Royal Family are titled Their Majesties (the reigning monarch, the queen consort, or the queen dowager) and Their Royal Highnesses (the queen consort and junior members of the family). Male members of the family are typically granted one of the Royal Dukedoms, historically held by the Crown, on the eve of their wedding:

Duke of Edinburgh (until 8 September 2022, the title was held by Charles, Prince of Wales, who became King Charles III upon the death of Elizabeth II. The title was recreated on 10 March 2023 for King Charles III's younger brother, Prince Edward); Duke of Gloucester (granted to younger members of the family, currently held by Prince Richard, grandson of George V); Duke of Kent (usually granted to younger sons of the monarch, holder - Prince Edward, grandson of George V); Duke of York (usually given to the second sons of monarchs; the holder from 1986 to 2025 was Prince Andrew, the second son of Elizabeth II); Duke of Cambridge (also granted to younger members of the family, holder - Prince William, Prince of Wales, eldest son of Charles III); Duke of Sussex (given to the younger children of the monarch; it was intended for Elizabeth II's youngest son, Prince Edward, who, however, preferred the specially created title of Earl of Wessex; as a result, the title is now held by Prince Harry, the youngest son of Charles III).
