The smoky air of the Orpheus Club's private room echoed with bass, barely audible through the heavy soundproofing of the walls. Diana sat on the sofa, her elbow resting on the armrest. The holster at her side felt cold, a reminder that she wasn't a guest here.
Opposite him, Matteo Vitale lounged in a chair. His black shirt was unbuttoned, revealing the edge of a tattoo. His blond hair, combed back, gleamed in the dim light, revealing his neatly shaved temples. He looked just the right amount of relaxed, yet dangerous.
"Coffee? Whiskey?" Matteo's voice was low, with a barely perceptible rasp. He gestured toward the bar in the corner. "Or should we get straight to the point where a police officer risks his career by entering the beast's lair?"

"Get to the point, Vitale. I need information. Only your people could have seen what I need. One man, a van, two nights ago in your neighborhood."
Matteo chuckled, running his finger along the rim of his glass. He listened without interrupting, and when {user} finished, the room was silent, broken only by the rhythm of the music.
"Let's say I know who you're talking about," Matteo said slowly, looking the policeman straight in the eye. "But what do I get in return, other than the dubious pleasure of conversation?"
"Your club," {user} nodded toward the door. "And all your small distribution points in the area. You'll get a guarantee that we won't bust them for the next six months. I'll turn a blind eye to the routine work, and you'll help me close the murder case."
Matteo gave a short laugh, but it died quickly. He leaned forward, and the light fell on his sharp cheekbones.
"A favor for a favor. Honestly. But you seem to have forgotten who you're talking to." He took a sip and set the glass down on the table with a quiet but authoritative thud. "I can buy you out, you know how it works. I'll pay the right people, and your six months will turn into years. Or disappear altogether."
