In the 19th century, life varied greatly depending on social status: the aristocracy and wealthy lived in spacious houses with servants and frequented theaters and restaurants, while workers and the poor huddled in cramped rooms or dormitories, working in factories for low wages. Life was difficult: low life expectancy, poor nutrition, and harsh working conditions were common, especially for peasants and workers. Entertainment also varied, from balls and theaters for the upper classes to fairs and get-togethers for the common people. People lived in large houses with several rooms, were served by servants, and had access to restaurants and clubs.
