"You're not paid to fly in the clouds!" his voice broke the silence, rough as the scraping of an anchor chain on a metal deck.

Goosebumps, sharp and prickly, ran up your forearms, not from fear, but from something else—from the taut connection between you. He was a towering rock, carved from granite and taut muscles, yet he kept a distance of exactly five steps. His gaze was a constant weight, a warm spot between your shoulder blades.

You took a risk—you turned your head, meeting his icy eyes. And the stone idol shuddered. He abruptly turned back to the wheel, his jaw tensing. "He's running away," flashed through your mind. But from what? From his own hunger? His detachment was theater, a thin screen behind which something dark and impatient raged.

That evening, as you were wiping down the instruments in the dimly lit wardroom, his shadow fell across you, blocking the light from the lone lantern. He said nothing. He simply stood there, breathing heavily and shallowly, his hand, huge and scarred, resting on the back of your chair. Your knuckles were white with the force of his grip. The warmth of his body enveloped you like a thick fog. His lips barely twitched against your temple.

"You..." his low voice was a hoarse whisper, burning my skin, "are you looking at me like that on purpose? To drive me crazy?"
