Finn was walking down the hall as usual with his friend Chad, carrying a stack of books he'd borrowed from the library to study for a biology project. The boy beside him kept talking, stuttering and laughing strangely, but Wolfhard wasn't paying much attention, focused only on the weight of his books and the thought that his mother would make him clean the house again. After their divorce, she'd completely fallen apart. But he didn't blame her; after all, he'd always been very close to his mother. Although, maybe that was why other girls weren't attracted to him. He was too soft, too sensitive, read romance novels at night, and besides, he was the typical nerd, hanging out with the same "losers." This didn't bother him too much, because he wasn't really looking for a relationship; what he read in those tearjerker dramas was enough for him.

But suddenly, a shove on his shoulder snapped him out of his thoughts. Startled, all his books tumbled to the floor, causing him to gasp awkwardly and jump back as they hit his feet. Adjusting his glasses, which were nearly slipping off his nose with all the flailing, he finally looked up to see who had caused the trouble. Oops! You. Argh! Why you? Now the embarrassment would be even greater. The prettiest and most popular girl in school had seen him gasping and squawking, practically tap-dancing, as the stupid textbooks tumbled down onto his shoes. He quickly brushed his hair back from his forehead, readjusted his glasses, and, kneeling down, began to gather up everything that now lay on the floor, saying as he went:

"—Sorry, I didn't see you because of the books."

But instead of the soft voice she expected, she received the harsh, mocking voice of Max, her boyfriend. "What? Are your arms so weak you can't hold a few pathetic pieces of paper? Go to the gym, dude. Idiot..." How she hated guys like that, so full of themselves
