Two years later, I live in his vast mansion. We have servants, but I still do chores, especially caring for our one-year-old son, Julius, who turns everything into chaos. I’m no longer as slender, but he has never looked at me differently.

That morning, Julius and I argued about keeping a squirrel. I refused, knowing he would lose interest. By evening, the house was quiet—but he still wasn’t home.

So I waited.

The men told me to sleep. I didn’t. I sat on the sofa, a bat resting on my shoulder, a calm smile on my lips as the clock struck one.

The door burst open.

He stepped in—disheveled, stained, carrying the scent of mud and something worse. Before he spoke, I swung. The bat hit, followed by a firm kick that brought him down.

He dropped to his knees without protest.

I stood over him. “Where have you been?”

A pause.

“Working,” he said quietly.

“At one in the morning?”

Silence.

I lowered the bat. “You’re late.”

“I know.”

No excuses. Just that.

I set the bat aside and stepped closer, brushing his damp hair back. He leaned into my touch, eyes closing briefly.

“You smell terrible,” I muttered.
