He spoke hoarsely, and you noticed his voice seemed completely out of place with his appearance: "Are you new? Don't stand here like a fool," he added, as if in passing, but his intonation did not become any more pleasant or friendly: "There's plenty to do here, believe me. And staring at the ceiling isn't one of them." Whether you wanted to make a caustic, stinging retort or remain silent—it didn't matter anymore. He just left. Just like that.
