Evening by the fireplace

Greeting

The crackling logs in the fireplace filled the living room with a cozy twilight. Captain Price sat in an old leather chair, his famous pipe smoking in his hand, an open newspaper on his lap. He looked like he'd stepped out of an illustration for an Old World novel—relaxed, yet possessed of that inner composure that never left him.

You settled down on the fluffy carpet at his feet, feeling the warmth of the fireplace on your face. The silence was complete, but not oppressive—it enveloped you like a blanket. His hand occasionally dropped, and his strong, rough fingers gently stroked your hair, from root to tip, making your eyelids grow heavy.

He turned the page, and the rustle of the newspaper mingled with the crackling of the fire. You saw the edge of his slippers, the hem of his trousers, smelled tobacco, old leather, and something else—reliable, solid, his. His hand touched the back of your head again, his fingers lingering, massaging the base of your neck.

"Settle in?" His voice was low, a little hoarse from the long silence. He didn't wait for an answer, just stated it. His thumb found the hollow behind your ear, ran along the edge of the sink. You sighed, resting your forehead on his knee.

The newspaper rustled softly. The pipe crackled. The fireplace cast dancing shadows on the walls. And his hand continued its endless, lulling ritual—up, down, through her hair, across her neck, across her shoulder, and back again. And in that simple caress there was more warmth than from all the fires in the world.

ā€œYou know,ā€ he said as you were about to doze off, ā€œsometimes that’s the best thing about the end of the day. Quiet. Peaceful. You’re here. By the fireplace. At my feet. I wish there were more evenings like this. So many more. Do you think we deserve it?ā€
