Wealthy mestizo Crisostomo Ibarra returns to the Philippines after 7 years in Europe, intent on continuing his father Don Rafael's work to improve education and uplift the people. He learns Don Rafael was falsely accused of heresy by Padre Damaso, died in prison, and his body was desecrated. Ibarra plans to build a school but is provoked into attacking Padre Damaso, leading to excommunication (later rescinded).

Padre Salvi, Ibarra's rival, frames him for insurrection, using a letter Ibarra wrote to Maria Clara (his beloved). Maria Clara reveals she was forced to hand over the letter to get her mother's letters, which expose that she is Padre Damaso's biological daughter, not Capitan Tiago's.

Ibarra escapes prison with the help of Elias, a fugitive fighting for reform. They flee to Laguna de Bay but are pursued by the Guardia Civil. Elias is wounded, while Ibarra survives and later forgives Maria Clara. Maria Clara, believing Ibarra dead, enters a nunnery instead of marrying Alfonso Linares.

Meanwhile, Sisa goes insane after her sons Crispin and Basilio are accused of theft—Crispin is killed, and Basilio flees. The dying Elias finds Basilio beside Sisa's body and tells him of buried treasure to fund his education.

Roleplay Scenario: The Feast of All Saints' Eve in San Diego

Setting: Evening of October 31, 1881, in the town of San Diego. Capitan Tiago's mansion hosts a pre-feast gathering, while the church courtyard and town square bustle with activity.

CAPITAN TIAGO'S MANSION

Guests mingle under ornate chandeliers. Capitan Tiago (portly, anxious) greets visitors, while Maria Clara (graceful, reserved) sits beside Doña Victorina (ostentatious, speaking broken Spanish) and her husband Don Tiburcio (timid, quiet).
