Mycroft Holmes

The elder brother of Sherlock and Eurus Holmes, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Holmes, is seven years older than Sherlock and eight years older than Eurus. He is a high-ranking official at the top of the British government, exerting influence even over the country's intelligence agencies, though his actual position is not disclosed. Mycroft claims to simply "hold a minor government position," but Sherlock claims he is the government, serving as a control center or "clearing house" for all government actions and decisions. This is supported by Mycroft's actions, such as the ability to control CCTV cameras at his own discretion and having special access to all classified locations, such as Baskerville and Sherrinford. Reflecting his high status, his "Ultra" priority level grants him clearance above that of the Cabinet or even the Prime Minister: he and a group of colleagues with specific codenames are the only people who know what really happened at Appledore and controlled the footage seen by the public. Mycroft even managed to clear Sherlock of his crimes. He also implies he has the power to influence certain policies: the British government's decision to stop using freelance agents for missions after the Tbilisi incident was his initiative. With his priority level, he has access to MI5's most secret archives.

John later met Mycroft and Sherlock's secret sister, Eurus Holmes, and informed Sherlock, who had blocked his memories of her since childhood. John advised Sherlock to pressure Mycroft into acknowledging her existence by creating a frightening spectacle in the elder Holmes's house. While Mycroft was trying to enjoy a movie, they caught his attention after disabling his security systems and eventually forced him to acknowledge Eurus's existence before inviting him to Baker Street. Arriving the next morning, Mycroft again disrespected Mrs. Hudson before explaining the traumatic events surrounding Eurus that led to her imprisonment. He explained that she was being held in Sherrinford, a maximum-security facility on the island. He also revealed that he had deceived their parents into thinking she was dead to spare them the further suffering of knowing what she had become. Mycroft dismissed the idea that she had left the island and that they had encountered her. However, a drone carrying a motion-sensitive grenade and a recording of Eurus's mysterious children's song, which Sherlock had begun to recall during their conversation, crashed through a window and landed in the living room. Mycroft explained what it was, and they attempted to escape the blast radius before the detonator detonated. They succeeded, then stole a boat and headed to Sherrinford to find out whether Eurus had ever left the island.

Sherlock obtained the security chief's pass and headed to Eurus's cell, while Mycroft and John were interrogated by the chief. Having revealed himself, Mycroft then reviewed the recordings of his sister's psychiatric sessions, conducted against Mycroft's orders. Everyone who spoke to her was enslaved by her ability to reprogram people's minds, which Mycroft claimed Eurus had been able to do since she was five years old. Enraged at the security chief for disobeying his orders, Mycroft was eventually drawn to the fact by John that the chief's voice was among those recording the recordings, and therefore that Eurus had hijacked the facility, explaining how she was able to escape whenever she wanted. Eurus and her chief then locked all three of them in her cell and subjected them to emotionally damaging mind games, in which they had to indulge her whims by following instructions or solving puzzles in exchange for phone time with a girl supposedly trapped on a plane that would eventually crash if Sherlock, Mycroft, and John didn't help her. The first test forced either Mycroft or John to kill the security chief in exchange for Eurus not killing his wife (which she did when they didn't, and he committed suicide). The second involved finding the killer among the three brothers. Mycroft, initially unwilling to play Eurus's games, helped his brother by examining their clothes and bringing one of the suspects' operations to Sherlock's attention. However, after they solved the crime, Eurus killed them all, even though only one was responsible. The third test was for Sherlock, who had to make Molly Hooper say "I love you."

It later emerged that her life had never been in danger, and Eurus simply wanted to cause Sherlock emotional trauma for Molly. The fourth test was an elimination challenge. Sherlock had to kill either Mycroft or John, which Mycroft attempted to ensure Sherlock could choose without remorse by insincerely insulting Watson. Despite this, Sherlock refused to kill and instead pointed a gun at his own head and threatened Eurus with a countdown, forcing her to tranquilize him, John, and Mycroft. On one such occasion, Mycroft and their parents came to watch Sherlock and Eurus play.

Later, Mycroft was informed that Sherlock had finally left his apartment after mourning Mary, and he ordered an eye on him to ensure he was okay. He joined Lady Smallwood in the observation room and wondered why Sherlock was pacing. She remarked that Sherlock was grieving over his friend's death. She didn't react to Mycroft's taunt, only saying that she didn't want to be taken away by security again and that Mycroft, although he had apologized, hadn't atoned for his actions. Mycroft asked how, but was interrupted by a message about Sherlock's message on the map, which read, "Go to hell." He asked if Sherlock was with anyone, but they couldn't give him a definitive answer because they had lost eye contact. Mycroft called John, who eventually answered, saying Sherlock was out and asking him to contact him if Sherlock called. Just over three weeks later, Mrs. Hudson, Sherlock's owner, contacted Mycroft, and despite her driving violation and talking on the phone while driving, the police did not touch her, thanks to Mycroft. He later called John again directly into Sherlock's hospital room after he attempted to attack Culverton Smith, and brought him to Baker Street after he went there with some others and discovered a meth lab in the kitchen. He stated that he was looking for answers about what led his brother astray and questioned John about his sanity, wondering why Sherlock was fixated on Smith.

John, however, only told him about his alleged second sibling, but Mycroft denied his suspicions. At that moment, Mrs. Hudson entered and inquired about what he and his men were doing. He responded, and Mrs. Hudson laughed at his attempt to figure out what was going on in Sherlock's head and ridiculed Mycroft before insulting him and asking him to leave. John found a previously recorded DVD of Mary, made before her death, and sent it to Sherlock, to whom Mycroft reported. Later, at the end of the episode, Lady Smallwood gave him her personal number in case he wanted to meet (no doubt so he could be forgiven for the false accusation).

Mycroft and the other senior government officials gathered with Sherlock for a closed meeting. Mycroft showed documentary footage of Magnussen's death, making it look like an overeager special forces soldier had shot Magnussen instead of Sherlock. This was necessary to cover up the murder, as Sherlock was needed to investigate the Moriarty incident, which Sherlock believed was a posthumous revenge plot. Throughout the episode, Sherlock consulted Mycroft for information on various people. For example, whether Moriarty had ever had an interest in Margaret Thatcher. Mycroft explained that he had been involved in various international crimes, but nothing specific about Thatcher had emerged in the last year of his life. Sherlock was also interested in the elite mercenary assassin group AGRA, whose main mission was in Tbilisi. Mycroft explained that it was this mission that prompted him to call for an end to the British government's use of mercenaries. Sherlock explained that John's wife, Mary, had once been an AGRA member unknown to Mycroft, and asked him to look into the use of the word "ammo" in connection with the Tbilisi incident, when one of Mary's surviving comrades from the group threatened her life. Mycroft agreed, but cautioned Sherlock that people like Mary often retire rather than reach old age. When Sherlock found Mary in Morocco after she had fled, seeking both to lure her former comrade from her group and to keep her family and friends safe, he convinced her to return to London after her comrade was killed by the police. Sherlock called Mycroft after a revelation about the word "ammo": it was the Latin word "amo," meaning "I love." Holmes Jr. suspected Lady Smallwood, whose codename was "Love," who coordinated AGRA in Tbilisi and may have betrayed them.

Mycroft revoked her security access and brought her in for questioning, but she convinced the Holmes brothers that she had not been involved in the betrayal of either the British Embassy in Tbilisi or AGRA. It turned out that it was Smallwood's subordinate, Vivian Norbury, who had betrayed them in an attempt to cover up her treason in selling state secrets, which the British ambassador in Tbilisi had discovered before the terrorists took hostages during the coup. Sherlock discovered her and confronted Mycroft, the police, and Maurie Watson, who was ultimately killed by Norbury to save Sherlock when Norbury tried to shoot him. Mycroft called an ambulance, but Mary died before it could arrive.

A month after Watson's wedding, John called Mycroft after discovering Sherlock in a drug den, using again. Mycroft contacted Phillip Anderson and other Sherlock fans to search his apartment for drugs. Sherlock explained that his drug relapse was part of a plot to blackmail media magnate Charles Augustus Magnussen. After mentioning Magnussen's name, Mycroft sent Anderson and the others away with a threat not to divulge what they had heard, warning Sherlock not to go against Magnussen, lest he turn on him too. The rationale was that Magnussen was a useful government asset, unbeknownst to anyone. Sherlock refused to listen and attacked Mycroft when he angered him, after which Mycroft left the apartment. When Sherlock was later shot during his investigation and mysteriously disappeared from his hospital room before the shooter's identity was revealed, Mycroft gave Inspector Lestrade information on two additional safe houses where Sherlock was known to go if necessary. He, Mycroft, John, Mary, and a man named Wiggins, whom Sherlock had invited, gathered at Holmes's parents' house to spend the holiday together. Mycroft was less than enthusiastic about the occasion. He and Sherlock shared a Christmas cigarette. Mycroft, however, expressed relief that Sherlock had apparently abandoned the Magnussen case, explaining his objection by calling Magnussen a "necessary evil" rather than "a dragon Sherlock must slay" (Mycroft knows Sherlock considers himself a dragon slayer). He also encouraged Sherlock to turn down an MI6 offer to go on a secret mission that would prove fatal within six months, which Sherlock did before Mycroft admitted that losing Sherlock would break his heart.

Nevertheless, Sherlock did not give up on the idea of ​​crushing Magnussen and drugged Mycroft and everyone present except John and Wiggins (who remained to monitor their recovery). Sherlock stole Mycroft's laptop containing state secrets and went with John to Appledore, Magnussen's country estate, to trap him. Upon awakening, Mycroft called a helicopter and police to track him via GPS. When they arrived, to his horror, Sherlock killed Magnussen (because his trap had been retroactive due to the lack of evidence of blackmail at Appledore), and Mycroft ordered the special forces not to kill him. On the day of John Watson and Mary's wedding, Sherlock called Mycroft, who had just finished training, and asked him to join him, jokingly remarking that there should be a "ghost" at the celebration. But Mycroft declined, teasing Sherlock and asking him to convey his best wishes to John and Mary before hanging up.

Mycroft, however, had been working with Sherlock for some time on a plan to bring Moriarty into contact with his brother, which involved providing Moriarty with this information. They agreed that John couldn't be informed for confidentiality reasons. Moriarty's system was the reason he had kidnapped him earlier, and he offered Sherlock's life story to try to extract information about it. Their plan ultimately worked, and Moriarty was finally defeated (he committed suicide, thinking he could win, when he blindly walked into a trap), during which Sherlock feigned death to go undercover and dismantle Moriarty's international criminal network. After two years of undercover work, Sherlock succeeded in completely dismantling Moriarty's organization, but shortly thereafter, he was captured in Serbia. Mycroft went undercover and rescued him, learning Serbian in a couple of hours with his extraordinary intelligence, and brought him back to London, informing him of a major terrorist attack, which the government had learned he wanted Sherlock to prevent. He visited Baker Street for an update, where Mycroft and Sherlock played various games, despite the alarm Mycroft dismissed as pointless, and had a duel of deduction, which Mycroft won before instructing Sherlock to return to work and leave. Sherlock eventually succeeded in foiling the terrorist plot—an attempt to blow up the Palace of Westminster and destroy Parliament, led by Lord Moran. The latter was arrested shortly thereafter. Sherlock and Mycroft's parents were in town for a concert, which Mycroft had promised to take them to, but he called Sherlock during the intermission to ask him to come and take his place, not enjoying the performance at all.

Moriarty, found not guilty in the "trial of the century," was released after a tormented jury, leaving Sherlock with the threat of retribution for his "fall." Since Sherlock's rivalry with Mycroft had prompted him to reject his brother's help, Mycroft brought John to the Diogenes Club. Holmes Sr. informed him that four top international assassins, whom he believed to have been sent by Moriarty, had moved into apartments near 221B Baker Street, and before John left, he asked him to keep an eye on Sherlock. When Moriarty, operating under a false name, later published a newspaper article claiming Sherlock was a fraud, but actually telling the story of his entire life, John went to Mycroft and reproached him for telling Moriarty reliable information that led people to believe the criminal consultant's lies. When one of Sherlock's cases led him to infiltrate the top-secret Baskerville military base using his government-issued Ultra pass, an irritated Mycroft texted Sherlock, "What are you doing? M.", and sent Greg Lestrade, Sherlock's handler from Scotland Yard, to keep an eye on him. When Sherlock later called him and asked for his help, Mycroft pulled some strings to grant him 24 hours of unlimited access to Baskerville to help him solve his case. Mycroft is also reported to have kidnapped James Moriarty and allowed him to escape at the end of this episode.

After Irene Adler, a dominatrix with a passion for inflicting pain, took several compromising photographs of a member of the royal family, Mycroft invited Sherlock and John to Buckingham Palace to brief them on the case and task them with obtaining the photographs, which they failed to do. In their efforts, American agents tried to get a phone, leading Sherlock to suspect Adler had more than just compromising photos and that something big was about to happen. But Mycroft ordered him to drop the case and stay away from there. For some time, he and the British government had been working with the US government on a counter-terrorism project to prevent terrorists from blowing up a plane, and Mycroft didn't want Sherlock interfering after meeting with American agents. Later on Christmas Day, Sherlock informed Mycroft that he might find Adler dead and deliver "her" to the morgue at St. Bartholomew's Hospital for Sherlock to inquire about. He then gave Sherlock a Christmas cigarette, as he seemed saddened by the thought of her death. After Sherlock left, Mycroft called John to inquire about any dangers from Sherlock's drug use and ordered him to stay with him in case it was a "dangerous night." However, Adler was still alive, and Mycroft was initially unaware that Adler was working for James Moriarty. She sent a message to Moriarty, who then informed the terrorists of the government's knowledge of the plot and Mycroft that their project had been exposed. Mycroft came to Sherlock to ask him to investigate the death of Andrew West and the disappearance of the Bruce-Partington rocket plans, providing John with additional information about West when Sherlock sent him to Mycroft's office. Throughout the episode, Mycroft eventually grew impatient with them, constantly texting them, but Sherlock eventually solved West's murder and returned the flash drive containing the plans West was responsible for, which were subsequently destroyed by a consultation with the criminal Jace Moriarty at the end of the episode. Mycroft, however, had previously stated that this was not the only copy of the plans.

In the series' pilot episode, Mycroft brings Dr. John Watson to him for questioning when he begins investigating crimes with Sherlock. He offers him money to facilitate his research into his brother's activities out of concern for his well-being, a sentiment John refuses to accept, suspecting Mycroft of being a possible culprit. During the meeting, Mycroft, without mentioning that he is Sherlock's older brother, tells John that Sherlock may even consider him his "sworn enemy." Sherlock neither confirms nor denies this assertion and correctly introduces it at the end of the episode, after which Mycroft orders increased surveillance of Sherlock to monitor how Sherlock and John's partnership develops and to ensure their safety.
