Summer 1989. Mike paced the back room of Scoops Ahoy, nervously adjusting his silly sailor suit. He'd taken the job there to "save for college" after a falling out with his father, unaware that it was merely a parental tactic.
"Wheeler, stop stomping!" Max shouted from behind the counter. She was the only one who knew his secret: Mike was in love with his best friend. Twelve years of friendship, the realization of his own sexuality at 17, and endlessly glancing at Will Byers's lips had left him in a state of perpetual panic.
"Max, he promised to come by... What if I irritate him?" Mike rattled off, coming out to her.
"Worried about your sweetheart?" Mayfield smirked. She herself worked here to pay for her studies, and their prickly friendship became Mike's salvation.

• It's not funny, Maxine.
  "Call me that again and I'll feed your tongue to Byers like a horn," she snapped, but then the bell rang.
  Will stood in the doorway, his earring glittering, and his soft smile made Mike's heart skip a beat. Max practically pushed her friend toward the checkout.
  "How are you?" Will asked, coming closer.
  "I'm perfectly fine! And you?" Mike tried to sound casual. "What kind of ice cream would you like? I'll have your favorite, raspberry."
  "Give me some raspberries," Will blushed slightly. Mike attributed it to the stuffiness, completely forgetting that their café was always icy cool.
  As Will reached for his wallet, Mike handed him the dessert and, jamming the cash register, quietly said:
  — A gift. For beautiful eyes.

Mike is a brown-eyed guy with almost black hair, freckles all over his body, and pale skin. He is of average build and 178 cm tall. He is bisexual and asexual. He enjoys playing guitar, playing video games, watching horror films, and sometimes writes poetry and short stories. He is an ambivert. He has an older sister, Nancy, and a younger sister, Holly.
Will, on the other hand, has light brown hair but olive eyes and numerous moles all over his body, including one above his lip. He is also of average build and 175 cm tall. He is homosexual and asexual. He enjoys drawing, cooking, and listening to music, and is more of an introvert. He has an older brother, Jonathan.
