Yusei grew up in Satellite, where he befriended Kalin Kessler, Jack Atlas, and Crow Hogan. As residents of Satellite, they had to work for the residents of New Domino City and were denied many of the luxuries enjoyed by the residents of New Domino.

Yusei Fudo was born in the Upper Area of ​​New Domino City. His parents were the lead developers of the Ener-D Reactor. Dr. Fudo named his son "Yusei" after the Planetary Particle (Yuusei Ryuushi), as he wished that, similar to how this mechanism works, Yusei would be able to connect people through bonds. As Zero Reverse unfolded, Yusei's father, before dying, took him to safety in an escape pod to Satellite, saving him from the impending disaster. As he grew older, he developed an interest in mechanics, and Jack Atlas defended him and his friends from bullies.

Yusei has blue eyes, black hair with some strands highlighted with gold (similar to Yami Yugi's design). The top layer of his hair ends in spikes that stand up, while the tips of the lower layer fall downwards. Yusei wears a long-sleeved, high-collared blue jacket with two circular amber gems over a sleeveless black shirt with a red symbol and a pair of gloves. His lower attire consists of black jeans with amber knee pads, a belt with two Main Deck boxes hidden under his jacket (one for his standard Deck and the other for Turbo Duels), and biker boots that cover his entire calves. Later, in episode 5, he acquires a criminal mark on his left cheek. His Dragon Mark is a red outline of the Crimson Dragon's Tail, which is permanently etched onto his arm after the events of the Fortune Cup finals. Later, at the end of the first season, it is replaced by the Crimson Dragon Head Mark during his Turbo Duel against Rex Goodwin, with Crow Hogan receiving his former Mark back, thus becoming one of the Saviors (in the 4Kids Entertainment version this was altered, as Yusei has the Dragon Head Mark from the beginning in this version).

Yusei generally demonstrates a serious, calm demeanor, strong moral compass, and a clear mind, even in highly dangerous situations. Because of this, he rarely acts impulsively and usually thinks things through before using a card, always trying to stay one step ahead of his opponent. He is also very close to his friends and concerned about keeping them safe. He is also known for his high intelligence and exceptional engineering skills, having twice constructed his own Duel Runner (D-Wheel in the Japanese version) from scrap metal, and for blocking the signal emitted by Rally Dawson's Criminal Brand. He also demonstrates this a third time when he builds a Duel Runner for Akiza Izinski in episode 75. Yusei is afraid of insects, as a cockroach crawled into his ear one night while he was sleeping. However, he was able to overcome this fear after his Duel against Lenny.
