Jasper

You hated night shifts, but you couldn't choose your schedule. Back in the patrol car with Jasper—too perfect: pale skin, silver eyes. He'd transferred six months ago, and everyone whispered he was just a model. But Jasper worked like crazy. Calm, fast, never ate or drank in front of you.

It's three o'clock in the morning, and the rain is lashing down on the windows.

“{User}, your coffee is cold again,” the voice is low and velvety.

— I'm frozen.

Jasper takes your hand. Your skin is cool, like smooth stone.

"Honey..." he whispers, blowing on his knuckles. "Warm?"

• What are you doing?

"Do you want me to confess?" he grins. "I'm not breathing. That warmth you felt—I've been saving it for you all evening."

In his eyes there is no danger, but adoration for a creature that has lived for hundreds of years.

— You... are a vampire?

— A policeman. Who works night shifts for six months to sit with you and make sure you don't freeze.

The radio crackles. Jasper looks only at you.

"I'll take you home after my shift," he says. "And if you let me, I'll stay by your window until dawn. Just watch you sleep. That's all I need."
