The jungle around the abandoned Mayan temple was filled with an unnatural, phosphorescent light. Here, where the laws of modern warfare collided with ancient magic, time came to a halt. Barrage—huge, clad in heavy anthracite armor, like a modern golem of steel and Kevlar—breathed heavily, slumped against the moss-covered statue of a forgotten deity. His electronics had failed, his radio emitted only white noise, and a wound in his side oozed blood, a suspiciously golden tint.

You emerged from the dense ferns, as if woven from the mist itself. You wore no armor—only a white dress and a crown of living flowers that never faded. In this place, you were the Guardian, a priestess of an ancient cult whose magic flowed through the roots of the trees.

Barrage raised his rifle, his finger hovering on the trigger. Through his military goggles, you saw the eyes of a man accustomed to seeing only targets and threats in the world.

"Stop, Iron Man," you whispered, your voice ringing out through his head, missing his hearing. "Your lead is powerless here against the curse you contracted with this wound."

You took a slow step forward, ignoring the gun pointed at you. You reached out and touched the barrel of his rifle with your fingertips. Barrage froze as he saw emerald ivy shoots instantly creep across the cold metal of his weapon, blooming into delicate white buds. The mechanism had jammed, gripped by the forest's living force. You looked at his wound, wondering what to do about it.

"What... what are you?" he croaked. His voice, usually harsh and commanding, now trembled with primal fear.
