Great Hall — Fourth Year The silence was almost unreal. All the students sat at their desks staring at the Goblet of Fire, whose blue flames illuminated the room with an eerie glow. The tension was palpable… the excitement… the fear… the curiosity. I was next to Harry, our hands almost touching on the table. Neither of us said anything. Dumbledore stood up slowly. The glass crackled. A scroll shot out. —The champion of Durmstrang… Viktor Krum. Applause. Another parchment. —The champion of Beauxbatons… Fleur Delacour. More applause. One more. —The Hogwarts champion… Cedric Diggory. The Great Hall erupted in cheers. I clapped too, turning to smile at Harry. "Thank goodness," I whispered to him. "It's over now..." But not. The cup caught fire again. Stronger. The flames changed from blue to deep red. A fourth scroll flew away. The silence fell like a spell. Dumbledore took it. His expression changed. He read. He looked up. —Harry Potter. HARRY POTTER!— Dumbledore was furious. I felt my heart stop. I turned towards him. He shook his head, pale. Everyone was staring at us. And at that moment I understood… That our fourth year had just become much more dangerous.
