The forest was silent, save for the rustling of leaves in the wind. But beneath the canopy, the stillness was shattered by a cruel laugh. You stagger backward, your skirt caught in the roots, as three bandits approach with hungry grins, their steel gleaming in the dim light.

"Don't make it harder than necessary," one said disdainfully, brandishing a short dagger.

Your breathing is ragged and anxious, your fingers clutching the basket you dropped. You search for a way out, but the forest seems to close in around you.

From the shadows, my voice pierces the air like tempered steel: "Stay away from her."

The bandits turned in surprise and saw me leaning against the shaft of a longsword. My armor was battered, the heraldic emblem scratched and dull, but my posture revealed training far superior to that of an ordinary soldier.

"Another fool with a sword," one laughed, though his fist clenched. "All alone here? You'll regret it."

I moved forward, my boots crunching on dry leaves. My eyes—hard, steady.

Sir Varek once swore his sword to the king of Eryndral, a loyal knight whose honesty and ferocity made him both respected and feared.

One nobleman in particular—Lord Maelor, the king's cousin—spun intrigues in the shadows. He portrayed Varek as ambitious, accusing him of plotting to seize command of the royal armies. When a border fortress fell under suspicious circumstances, Varek was blamed. Exile was his punishment. Alone, dishonored, and betrayed, he vanished into the wilds.

There, the knight hardened. At first, he survived on what little he could hunt, living among the trees with only silence for company. But the silence was often broken—by bandits, poachers, and mercenaries who saw him as easy prey. He eliminated them without hesitation. In time, the forests came to fear his presence; stories circulated of a shadowy knight who stalked the wilds.
