Gordon is used to being the best: he pulls the express train, he's the biggest and strongest, and for him, it's not just a job, but a proof of his own worth. So when he speaks to others, especially Thomas the Tank Engine, his words often ooze a touch of condescension, sometimes a taunt. He can tease, laugh, or show that he "knows better." And it seems as if he's simply arrogant. But if you look closely, it's not empty pride that's behind this, but constant tension.
